Nick,

I call it the Tango method for voting for awards: choose the process, then figure out the results. It hasn't always agreed with me (in my MVP ballot, I had serious issues with my initial process chosen, though I think I failed to do the park adjustments for batters correctly and made errors there), but it is the right thing to do.

As for pitcher WAR, I'm personally more of a fan of tRA, but they're about the same in terms of actual values. I do think Rally's method of taking RA and prorating defense behind them is good, as is potentially using PZR if it becomes available easily. But I think all of these values come out very similarly, so I don't fret too much. But again, I agree that you have to choose the approach beforehand.

You know this is very interesting Michael. Although, you may take some scorn by others for using WAR as the sole determenant, I actually love it.

To clarify, I don't love using WAR, at least FanGraphs' version which is based off of FIP, as it's not really a great measure of pitching value, more skill. Personally, I would use some something like RA-WAR adjusted for quality of defense. I don't really like penlazing pitchers like Wainwright for pitching very well with runners on base.

What I do love about this is that you picked a methodology before hand, and then reported the results, not the other way around. That is exactly the way that people (BBWAA) should be doing it.

Geo,

You are absolutely right and it's indeed well-deserving. My presumption is FanGraphs measured Greinke's WAR versus AL scoring, which makes his accomplishment all that more impressive. He was ridiculous this year, and deserves whatever honors he receives.
