Marlins offered a fourth year club option to Johnson

Posted by: Michael Jong

This from Joe Frisaro of MLB.com.

Without getting into specific dollar figures, [Josh Johnson's agent Matt Sosnick] said the Marlins offered three years with a club option for a fourth.

[Josh Johnson's] camp was hoping the deal would at least match what Kansas City’s Zack Greinke signed before the 2009 season. The Royals’ ace, recently named the American League Cy Young Award winner, signed for four years at $38 million.

Aside from the fact that the Marlins apparently are refusing to offer a guaranteed fourth year, I’m starting to side a bit with the Marlins. They did offer a club option, though of course that is certainly no guarantee. I think in this case it would depend on the dollars. If the offer from the Fish was 3 years / $22M with a fourth option year of let’s say $12M, Johnson’s camp was probably right to reject the deal, if anything to work out something better. The dollars should most certainly go up, but this odd contention about four years being critical is looking when the Marlins even offered a club option year.

Nevertheless, I have resigned to the fact that we will not be signing JJ. Here’s hoping a trade or a change of heart on either side is in order.
