JoeA,

Agreed with you on OBP, clearly they get that. But as an organization, it would be a shame if they didn't. As to what else they know, it just seems like a stats department would have spotted such problems like Boni. The fact that they didn't see it seems like they focused too much on his 80-tool speed and not his 45-tool contact and his 20-power.

As for the infield, I imagine that added wear and tear couldn't help. I'm not too familiar with the general effect, but if it causes uneven raises in the infield dirt, it could lead to some bad hops. If anything, the effect is negative, but slight. We're not talking too many runs here.

Memo,

First off, welcome to Marlin Maniac's comments section! Glad to have you on board.

I'd be inclined to agree with you, I share an equally high sentiment on Beinfest/Hill. But never hearing anything about that and not getting any indication of these things is disconcerting. Decisions like the Bonifacio decision also don't help.

What R-squared measurements are you talking about, and what are they correlating? I'm curious because I definitely see different things. For example, things like OPS and wOBA correlate in the 0.9 range with runs scored on a team and seasonal level (not surprising, since wOBA is based directly on linear weights and OPS has a linear-esque system behind it).

It seems they understand the value of OBP hence the Nick Johnson trade last year. Unfortunately he wont be around this year. To me, its questionable whether they place enough emphasis on defense. The team seems to consistently outperform projections though, so lets hope that continues. Speaking of defense Michael, what, if any effect do you think the Dolphins and Hurricanes playing football on the field the second half of the year has on our infield defense?

I would imagine they have a balanced view of baseball. I have nothing to back up this assertion, other than the fact that I think Hill and Beinfest are both pretty sharp guys. I can't imagine them not taking this into consideration.

If I were them, I'd do a 50/50. Weigh the statistics 50% and the intangibles 50%. Most of the regressions I've seen put the R-Squared at around 50%, so we know a qualitative analysis (read: scouting, personal knowledge) will help out with the rest.
