Isiah,

The Marlins may know more because they actually got a chance to work out with him, as he was more interested in joining the Fish than other teams. If the Marlins got a chance to see Vazquez more extensively than other teams, then they must have the best information on the situation. This presumes that they know what they are doing, which I am going to assume because I still want to give them the benefit of the doubt. We'll see how it turns out.

thanks for the shout out :). after thinking about it a little more, i agree that for a team like us it's important to take chances for big gains, but still, we have to weight the chances based on our information. the guy's velocity clearly dropped, and banking on a good jamie moyer doesn't make me happy when we pay him $7m. Sure, the marlins may know something i don't, but why (and how) don't other clubs know that?

Ehsan,

That's a good point, and I've heard a bit of that as well. I'm sure that has some effect on the pitching staff, though as you mentioned, I don't know how much. It could have played a role, but enough to guarantee an extra year and twice the salary? I'm not sure how the overall package that Buck provides, even with the game-calling, is twice as good as Torrealba's going forward.

The Jays fans I talked to kept raving about the intangibles John Buck possess. They said he was great at handling the Jays young staff, like he'll have to do with the Marlins. They also said he's a great game manager. Yes I know that cannot be measured in stats, but it does help the Marlins and our young pitchers.
