Making an Uggla-to-Jays trade on paper

AUTHOR: | IN: Analysis, Marlins, News, Popular | COMMENTS: None Yet

Recently, friend of the Maniac Ian Hunter of The Blue Jay Hunter talked about his thoughts on the whole Dan Uggla trade situation. It’s a good piece and something worth looking into even as a Marlins fan. Ian asked me what I thought would be a fair return for Uggla, and here’s what I wrote back to him: I think the only thing the Marlins can honestly get back for Dan Uggla is assets worth about $10M in surplus value. That equates to about a Top 75-100 prospect, which matches up nicely with someone like Travis d’Arnaud. With the catching [...]

What did the Marlins give up in Maybin?

AUTHOR: | IN: Analysis, Marlins, Popular, Rants | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

Both Dave Cameron and friend of the Maniac Joe Pawlikowski had articles up on FanGraphs today regarding the Marlins’ recent trade activity. Sending Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin when both players were integral to the Miguel Cabrera trade had to feel bad for any Marlin fan, but it was a price that had to be paid given the Marlins’ current situation and the play of the two players. Or was it necessary? While the Miller move was a no-brainer (Dustin Richardson appears to be about as good as Miller, except Miller was out of options and was heading into arbitration), [...]

Coghlan, Bonifacio lead jumble in center field

AUTHOR: | IN: Analysis, Marlins, News, Popular, Rants | COMMENTS: 6 Comments

One major consequence of the recent trade of center fielder Cameron Maybin is that the Marlins are now left to scramble for pieces to replace him in center field. This scramble may end up causing a huge jumble defensively not only out near the Bermuda Triangle in Sun Life Stadium but also within the infield as well. The impending trade of Dan Uggla further complicates those issues, leaving the Marlins to handle a pretty hefty mess defensively. Let’s start out with center field. MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro had this to say about the Marlins’ center field options: With Maybin now headed [...]

Once again looking for Uggla suitors

AUTHOR: | IN: Analysis, Marlins, News, Popular, Rants | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

It would seem than an extension for Dan Uggla is now going to be a stretch, at least according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. It seems that the Marlins (rightfully) aren’t interested in going longer than a four-year deal, and Uggla seems intent on getting that fifth year in an extension, so the Fish may look to trade the second baseman as early as next week. A number of teams seem to be interested in our long-time second baseman, and the Marlins should at least have a few different offers to look into. There are multiple aspects of this [...]

Marlins give up on Cabrera trade tandem

AUTHOR: | IN: Analysis, Marlins, News, Popular, Rants | COMMENTS: None Yet

Over the weekend, the Marlins made two moves, only one of which was expected. As expected, the Fish dealt Andrew Miller away, avoiding arbitration and getting something for him in return (H/T MLBTR). The deal to the Boston Red Sox brought back reliever Dustin Richardson, who isn’t terribly interesting but would be cheap if he stayed on the major league roster. That deal seemed underwhelming and completely predictable given Miller’s 2010 performance and his arbitration status. What was more surprising was the second trade of the weekend, dealing the other major piece from the 2007 Miguel Cabrera trade away. The Marlins sent [...]

Marlin Maniacs interested in long-term value for Uggla

AUTHOR: | IN: Analysis, Marlins, Media, Popular, Rants | COMMENTS: None Yet

I’ve taken a look at the last few days’ worth of poll results from the the various Uggla options, and it seems two of the four choices given were the clearly most desirable. Propose and have a five-year extension accepted: 20 (47.6%) Trade him during the offseason: 16 (38.1%) Trade him sometime during the season: 2 (4.8%) Keep him throughout the season, offer him arbitration and receive the draft pick compensation from him signing elsewhere: 4 (9.5%) The majority of the readers were interested in getting the most future value out of Uggla, whether it was via an extension or [...]

The Uggla Options

AUTHOR: | IN: Analysis, Marlins | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

We talked a couple days ago about Dan Uggla’s rejection of the deal the Marlins offered, supposedly a four year, $48M deal. One additional point of interest that comes along with the deal’s rejection is that the Marlins now have a variety of options with Uggla. Rather than locking Uggla into a long-term deal with the uncertainties of the future, the Marlins have the possibility of receiving value anyway from the uncertainties of the future of younger players in the form of either prospects or draft picks. While the Marlins continue to work towards keeping Uggla around past 2011, Marlins [...]

A quick look at the Marlins’ payroll

AUTHOR: | IN: Analysis, Marlins, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

Here at Marlin Maniac, we have quite a treat coming up soon. Lou from SoFlaMarlins has done offseason looks at payroll budget and arbitration expectations for the Marlins for a little while now, and last offseason I used some of those figures to examine the Marlins’ potential financial situation heading into 2011. You can check out Lou’s arbitration projections from 2009 heading into 2010 here for an example of his excellent work. This season, I contacted Lou (on the advice of contributor John Herold) and asked him if he’d be willing to share his offseason payroll work with us this [...]

Uggla rejects stunning four-year Marlins deal

AUTHOR: | IN: Analysis, Marlins, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

According to Ken Rosenthal, Dan Uggla rejected a four-year, $48M deal from the Marlins over the weekend. This is off the heels of news that the Marlins offered a four-year deal recently, which would start at $8M for the 2010 season. Initially, the Marlins were talking about a deal that would start at $8M, but would most assuredly be going up in value. Marlin Maniac readers had surmised that the deal would have been around a four-year deal worth $42M based on the most recent poll taken here at MM. The fact that the Marlins offered a deal worth $12M [...]

Revisiting a four-year deal for Uggla

AUTHOR: | IN: Analysis, Marlins, News | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman tweeted today that the Marlins have shifted to a four-year deal for second baseman Dan Uggla. The only money-related detail we got from the tweet was that the deal would start at $8M for 2011. We can obviously expect seasonal increases in salary from there. Since the Marlins just supposedly offered a presumably more reasonable deal, I think this is  as good a time as any to revisit the contract crowdsourcing we did here at Marlin Maniac for Uggla’s next deal with the Fish. Let’s take a look at what 27 Marlins fans thought the Marlins [...]
