The Atlanta Braves are on drugs, Marlins need to take advantage

AUTHOR: | IN: Analysis, Marlins, Media, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

Editor’s note: Ehsan is speculating here, and any thought of a trade of this kind would be HIGHLY unlikely. We can dream, but we should all also be realistic. -MJ I woke up this morning and saw Buster Olney’s daily column. Usually I just read through it and move on with my day. However, today one tidbit Olney mentioned really caught my attention. He has been viewed an organizational building block, but he struggled through injuries and slumps in 2011, and there are voices within the franchise asking the question of whether he can be counted on. With Chipper Jones nearing the [...]

Marlins All-Time Team (Pitchers)

AUTHOR: | IN: Fish Cap, History, Marlins, Media, Popular, Revisiting '03 | COMMENTS: None Yet

On Wednesday I made my All-Time Marlins Team (Batting). For the most part, the fans picked the same team as me. Today, I will take a look at what I believe the Marlins All-Time Team (Pitching) is. Ace: #55 Josh Johnson  Johnson is my ace of the Marlins staff. When he is healthy, he has been one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. He is still young, but has already made a major mark on the Florida Marlins. Let’s hope he is healthy in 2012.     #27 Kevin Brown   Brown recorded the franchise’s second no-hitter in [...]

The last week has been one wild ride.

AUTHOR: | IN: Marlins, Rants | COMMENTS: None Yet

Let’s just run down the list shall we: 1.) I’ve already discussed the new Marlins logo.  Though my initial reaction was not positive, it is starting to grow on me…..sort of. 2.) Marlins team President David Sampson calls all old school die hard Marlins fans a bunch of bitches. 3.) Our closer has an identity crisis.  Long live the #OviedoCoaster. 4.) We re-signed Omar Infante.  Awesome, now I can check that one off the to-do list. 5.) Jack McKeon announced he will retire (again) after the end of this season. 6.) We hired a new manager named Ozzie, no, not [...]

Marlins All-Time Team

AUTHOR: | IN: Fish Cap, History, Marlins, Popular, Revisiting '03 | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

With today being the last game ever for the Florida Marlins, becoming the Miami Marlins next season. The Marlins are set to name their all-time team after the game. This will be along with other festivities, including many former Marlins taking the field. Without any further ado, I will name my all-time Marlins team based on on my favorite Marlins of all time. This will not be statistically based at all. Just a fun look at my favorite Marlins position-by-position. Catcher:  #7 Ivan Rodriguez  I gave a lot of consideration to Charles Johnson, but this play by Pudge put him [...]

Omar Infante to stay on at second base

AUTHOR: | IN: Analysis, Marlins, Media, Player Profile | COMMENTS: None Yet

In a busy day in terms of Marlins moves, one piece of unequivocal good news came out (we’ll talk about the other piece a little bit later). The Marlins announced yesterday that they re-signed Omar Infante to a two-year deal worth $8 million total. I had mentioned quite a few times earlier to MM readers via Twitter that the Marlins would be wise to re-sign Infante given their lack of depth in the middle infield, especially if they were not considering moving Chris Coghlan to second base. Since June 5, Infante has returned to being his old self and then some, batting [...]

Come vote for your Marlins on the Fans Scouting Report

AUTHOR: | IN: Marlins, Media | COMMENTS: None Yet

Every year at The Book Blog, Tom Tango runs the Fans Scouting Report, where he asks the viewers of teams to rate their players according to various criteria. The FSR is up this year, and the Marlins need your help. Right now, we only have 14 ballots in, and we could really use your expert eyes on the matter. Once we get up to about 20 ballots, we should be able to adequately assess how good or bad a player is compared to players of similar position. So give it a go and vote for the players that you have watched [...]

What’s in a logo?

AUTHOR: | IN: Marlins, Rants | COMMENTS: None Yet

Apparently this logo has recently surfaced and word is spreading like wildfire and according to Palm Beach Post writer Joe Capozzi this could very well be the actual new Miami Marlins logo even though the Marlins front office has not confirmed or denied it as of yet.  Their “official” announcement and unveiling will occur on November 11, 2011, or because we are not cliche’ at all: 11-11-11. I have all sorts of mixed feelings about this myself if this is in fact the new logo.  It does have a certain futuristic look to it, which is cool, but I’m not [...]

Marlins primed for a big off-season?

AUTHOR: | IN: Marlins, News, Popular | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

On Friday, ESPN’s Jayson Stark posted an article on ESPN about the Florida Marlins off-season plans. The Marlins made the ESPN.com website and there was no controversy, no mention of how much Loria is lusting for Ozzie Guillen, and no mention of a Marlins player filing a grievance against them. It seems like Stark did something unique, he made an article and for the first time, no sports team from Miami was obliterated with hate. Of course this one line: Hey, we know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking your wife spent more money at the mall last week than the [...]

Status Update

AUTHOR: | IN: Marlins, Media | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

Hello Marlin Maniac readers, I just wanted to give a quick status update on the site and on my own work on it. Over the past two-plus years, I have been covering the Marlins on Marlin Maniac with a passion. That passion has occasionally waned, but it has always been there at a high level, and I like to think that I have put forth my best effort in regards to coverage of the Fish over the past two years. It has been a fun ride, occasionally a blast, occasionally a difficult one, and that ride has not yet reached [...]

Logan Morrison files grievance against Marlins

AUTHOR: | IN: Marlins, News, Rants | COMMENTS: None Yet

Logan Morrison has filed a grievance through the Players Association with regards to his demotion last month. There has already been quite a bit of discussion regarding the matter; Blaine Blontz covered it on FanSided’s Call to the Pen, and Eric Seidman did a great job breaking down the various aspects of the situation over on FanGraphs. To those thoughts, I’ll add a few more. The Marlins stand to lose nothing in this grievance. The worst that can happen is they lose a bit of money paying Morrison’s lost major league salary for the ten days that he was demoted. As [...]
