Miami Marlins lose out on Yoenis Cespedes

I asked you guys a couple of weeks ago what team did you guys believe that Yoenis Cespedes was going to sign with. Here is a look at the results of that poll:

Which Team Will Land Yoennis Cespedes?

  • Miami Marlins (60%, 73 Votes)
  • Chicago Cubs (20%, 24 Votes)
  • Detroit Tigers (7%, 9 Votes)
  • Cleveland Indians (5%, 6 Votes)
  • Other (3%, 4 Votes)
  • Chicago White Sox (2%, 3 Votes)
  • Baltimore Orioles (3%, 3 Votes)

Total Voters: 122

Only 4 people choose “other” as their option. I hope for your sake you considered the Oakland Athletics. Cespedes signed a 4-year contract for $36 million with the A’s. That is an AAV of $9 million. It is rumored that the Miami Marlins offered Cespedes around $36 million for 6 years, an AAV of $6 million.

A lot of Marlins fans today are getting on Cespedes for taking more money and going to Oakland. I do not  blame him, nor do I blame the Marlins for not ponying up more money.

Cespedes is a big risk, I personally thought the Marlins were going to be more aggressive and offer more. I would have actually been fine with the Marlins going up to the reported deal he was first seeking, 6 years $60 million.

Losing Cespedes is not really what makes me depressed today. It is knowing that we will have to go through an entire season with Emilio Bonifacio as our starting center fielder which makes me cry!
