In the Battle of the AAA-level Teams on Saturday, the Miami Marlins blanked their AAA affiliate, the New Orleans Zephyrs, by a score of 7-0. The Zephyrs were held to just 3 hits – one each by Matt Diaz, Wilson Valdez, and Kyle Skipworth. Wade LeBlanc pitched four no-hit innings, and the majority of the Marlins’ bullpen – Ryan Webb, Chad Qualls, Mike Dunn, Jon Rauch, AJ Ramos, and Steve Cishek – all pitched in the game, each racking up at least one strikeout. For the Zephyrs, Brad Hand took it on the chin, giving up 6 runs on 8 hits in his 4 innings of work.
Offensively, the Marlins’ big league team had a few stand-out performances. Placido Polanco went to town, knocking two home runs off of Hand to finish the day at 2-for-5 with 5 RBI. Prospect-turned-suspect Isaac Galloway added a home run for the big league squad in the 7th inning. Juan Pierre and Austin Kearns also each added a pair of hits. In the revolving door of the cleanup spot, Justin Ruggiano went 0-for-4 with a strikeout. Giancarlo Stanton was also held hitless.
Up next: The Marlins open the 2013 season on Monday afternoon at 1:05. Ricky Nolasco will take the mound in Washington against Stephen Strasburg and the defending NL East champions.
