Marlins Way: Look at Final Mock Drafts

June 8, 2012; Tallahassee, FL, USA; Late rumors before the draft have Mark Appel going number one overall to the Houston Astros.

The Houston Astros sit on the clock with their number one selection with just a few hours left until they submit their pick to the commissioner. If you think the Astros have already made up their minds on who they are picking, you could be incorrect.

In last season’s draft, the Astros did not even make the decision until last moment that they would be taking short stop Carlos Correa. Their move sent a shockwave down the board, as teams almost had to ditch their draft plans last minute. Players they did not expect to see fall to them fell.

The same could happen this season, with the Astros holding the top pick again. The Colorado Rockies have been rumored for the past night to be ready to go off course as well.

Here is one final look at who the experts have the Marlins drafting in their final mock drafts:

Analysis: I’m also hearing them linked to Austin Meadows and Hunter Renfroe.

For whatever it’s worth, all three of the biggest draft experts have the Marlins taking right handed starting pitcher Branden Shipley. He would be a fine pick for the Marlins and could make a positive impact on the organization sooner rather than later.

The interesting to note is that Sickels has the Marlins picking Shipley over Tar Heel third baseman, Colin Moran. The Marlins have an immediate need at third base and Moran is expected to be a quick riser. Could be interesting to see if the Marlins actually go through with that plan if both players are on the board when they pick.
