Down on the Farm Report for the Miami Marlins: June 18th:

Skipworth hits a walk-off grand slam, the Suns offense erupts for 11 runs, Andrew Heaney has a strong start, and Romero has a huge offensive game in a Muckdogs loss.

Triple-A:

New Orleans Zephyrs (37-37)  vs. Oklahoma City RedHawks (37-33)

Win 4-3

Kyle Skipworth, C: 2-for-4, HR (2), 4 RBI, R

Jake Smolinski, DH: 2-for-4, 2B (9), R, SO

Duane Below, SP: 6.2 IP,  5 H, 3 ER, 2 R, 2 BB, 8 SO

Chris Hatcher, RP: 1.1 IP, 3 BB

There may not be anything more fantastic in sports than walkoff grand slam. That is exactly what catcher Kyle Skipworth did to lead the Zephyrs to a 4-3 win. Below enjoyed another strong start in Triple-A, but did not get any run support while he was on the mound. The seventh inning was a struggle for Below, as he and Hatcher combined to give up all three runs the RedHawks would score in the game.

Double-A:

Huntsville Stars (29-40) @ Jacksonville Suns (35-33)

Win 9-4

Jake Marisnick, CF: 2-for-3, 2B (9), 2 R, SO, HBP

Kyle Jensen, RF: 1-for-3, HR (16), 2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 R

Adam Conley, SP: 5.0 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, BB, 7 SO, HR

Michael Brady, RP: 1.0 IP, 2 SO

Kyle Jensen continues his hot hitting in the month of June, as he knocked out his 9th homer of the month. The nine home runs would not only lead the minors for the month, but the MLB as well. Marisnick had a big game at the plate as well, before he had to leave after getting hit by a pitch. He had X-Rays on the hand after the game, and the results came back negative. He is listed as day-to-day, but the organization will be cautious with him, as that is the same hand he broke in spring training.

Conley struggled in his start, allowing 10 runs and six earned runs in the game. On a positive note, he did strikeout seven hitters. His season ERA now sits at an even 4.

High Class A:

Bradenton Marauders (26-41) @ Jupiter Hammerheads (35-32)

Win 3-2

Wilfredo Gimenez, 1B: 3-for-4, R

Ryan Goetz, 3B: 1-for-4, 2B (5), R, SO

Andrew Heaney, SP: 5.0 IP, H, R, 0 ER, BB, 4 SO

Nick Wittgren, RP: 1.2 IP, H, SO, SV (14)

Heaney continues to pitch like the first round pick he was in last season’s draft, pitching another game. He now has 30 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings in 2013. Wittgren continued his All-Star campaign 2013 season with his 14th save of the season. His season ERA currently sits well below 1 at 0.82

Low Class A: Greensboro Grasshoppers
No game scheduled

Short-Season:

Auburn DoubleDays (2-1) @ Batavia Muckdogs (1-2)

Loss 6-3

Avery Romero, 2B: 3-for-4, BB, 2 R

Scott Carcaise, 1B: 2-for-5, 2 2B (3), 2 RBI, 2 SO

Jarlin Garcia, SP: 2.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO

Miguel Del Pozo, RP: 2.0 IP, H, 2 R, ER, 5 BB, 2 SO

The Muckdogs pitching struggled badly in this game, walking nine hitters and allowing seven hits in the game. All those baserunners lead to a 6 run outburst for Auburn’s offense. Despite the loss, second baseman Avery Romero continues to hit well early in his first full season. He is an interesting prospect to watch going forward, as he could emerge as a top prospect down the line.
