The Miami Marlins third round pick from a year ago, third baseman Colin Moran, will be the lone Miami Marlins representative in Saturday’s Fall Stars Game.

The former North Carolina Tarheel is on the West Division roster in the Arizona Fall League All-Star game. The game will be televised on MLB Network at 5:00 PM Arizona time.

Despite the selection to the All-Star game, Moran is not having a particularly strong showing at the AFL. Through 13 games, owns a .167/.310/.208 slash line in 44 plate appearances. Only two of his eight hits have gone for extra bases (zero home runs).

Moran does have seven runs batted in and has shown the strong plate discipline that made him a highly touted prospect in the 2013 Amateur draft. He has walked three more times (9) than he has struck out (6).

While the lack of power is a bit concerning for Moran, it is also important to remember that the AFL is meant more for experience for young players than it is used to judge a prospect going forward.

Moran being the Marlins lone representative is a bit surprising with 2012 first round pick Andrew Heaney and minor league reliever of the year Nick Wittgren also on the Glendale Desert Dogs roster.

Heaney owns a 2.53 ERA with 11 strikeouts and just four walks in 10 2/3 innings of work. As I pointed out the other day, Heaney is a very strong candidate to crack the Marlins rotation out of spring training in 2014.

Nick Wittgren is coming off a season in which he posted just a 0.77 ERA, he has been just as impressive in the Arizona Fall League. Wittgren has struck out 12, walked one, and allowed just three singles in 7 2/3 innings of work.
