Miami Marlins Winter Meetings: Live Blog, Day 1

With the Winter Meetings set to kick off today, Marlin Maniac will be holding a live blog that will allow Marlins fans to stay up to date with everything that is going on at the Winter Meetings. It’s like you get to be there yourself!

The Meetings are taking place from December 9th-12th in Orlando Florida. These meetings allow representatives for all teams to get together and hammer out deals that presumably improve their teams.

The Marlins figure to be pretty big players during these meetings, as they have been dangling Logan Morrison for the better part of two weeks. We will be taking side bets during this time as to which day Morrison will get traded. All kidding aside, this space will allow us to explore every rumor, regardless of how big or how small, and discuss the ramifications of all moves for the Marlins.

With a new front office, we can be sure that they are going to want to make their mark on this team, and we have seen that already with the signings of Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Rafael Furcal and pending Garrett Jones. Look for the Marlins to be big players over the next few days.

Please join us in the comments section below and jump in with your opinion, we value everyone’s, even if you don’t agree with us. We will get started at 8:30 am EST.

Scroll down for the live blog.

Hey Everyone, Chris here to get this started. Thanks for joining us. Please share anything that is on your mind today!

  • Chris Logel

Even though it is early, there is already some news coming out of the winter meetings and it actually involves a former Marlins player. It looks like Jorge Cantu has signed with the…Doosan Bears!!!!! it is a Japanese team

    • GAParkins

Doosan Bears are a Korean team, and they just lost the Korean national championship to the Samsung Lions, featuring another former Marlin, Rick van den Hurk. It was a seven-game come-from-behind cliffhanger of a series.

      • Chris Logel

It looks like I need to brush up on my international leagues. Glad to hear Rick is still pitching.

  • Chris Logel

Cantu’s drop off really surprised me. I always liked him and thought he would figure it out. I guess he is still young, but really needs to kill it in the Japanese League

    • Placidin

Cantu is actually headed to Korea. He had a huge season last year in the Mexican League.

      • Chris Logel

I didn’t realize they were different ehh…hmmm…ehh, it is getting warm in here no?

  • Chris Logel

What did you guys think about Cantu?

  • GAParkins

I seriously wish Tom Verducci and Ken Rosenthal were inversely active on Twitter.

  • Chris Logel

If they haven’t blocked you yet, then you’re just not trying hard enough.

  • Chris Logel

White Sox are listening to offers for Chris Sale, according to various reports.

  • Chris Logel

I am sure he is going to cost a fortune

  • Chris Logel

Joe Torre, Bobby Cox, and Tony LaRussa will be notified within 30 minutes on whether they will be elected into the hall of fame.

  • Chris Logel

Does anyone disagree with any of them making into the hall of fame?

  • Chris Logel

Does anyone have any thoughts about the Marlins signing Saltalamacchia and the future plans for the catcher position?

  • Chris Logel

I was surprised to see Curtis Granderson sign with the Mets. I kind of laughed at that one. Granderson doesn’t really strike fear into me, even if he is in our division.

  • Chris Logel

Lots of talk about David Price being the center of attention today at the Meetings. Any guesses on where he is going to go to? (I think Texas)

  • Chris Logel

Don’t be shy folks, the first comment is always the hardest. :)

  • Chris Logel

If you have any questions about the Marlins feel free to ask away as well.

  • Chris Logel

What do you guys think of the Mariners signing of Cano? (overpaid, necessary, etc)

  • Chris Logel

Some talk about the Dodgers possibly trading Matt Kemp. I am torn with him, On one hand, it would be awesome to see him in center field next to Giancarlo Stanton. On the other, he probably won’t help us much long term.

    • Placidin

Not an option for the Marlins, I think. Dodgers and Marlins have similar needs in the infield, so probably not good trade partners. Plus the Dodgers will look for the other team to pick up at least some of the remaining contract. With the deals we have seen so far, Kemp’s contract is looking better and some team will probably be willing to pick up a big chunk of it.

      • Chris Logel

They are reporting that they would be willing to eat a large part of his contract to get some prospects in return, remember, money is not an issue for them right now.

  • Chris Logel

Joe Frisaro just reported that a deal has been finalized with Garrett Jones and the Marlins. He is expecting an announcement today sometime.

  • Chris Logel

I think this move is a good one for Miami. I may be in the minority but if we are able to get a solid return for Logan Morrison, than I am completely on board with it. I feel like we are sacrificing some on base percentage in exchange for some home runs, but I agree with the move.

    • Placidin

I like that they are moving on from LoMo, who I think just needs a change of scenery. Only problem with Jones is that he is a part time player. Now Marlins need to find a RH hitting 1B and a 3B. Maybe free agent Jeff Baker or more likely Ruggiano learns to play 1B.

      • Chris Logel

What about Juan Uribe? I find him intriguing, but don’t like the fact that he wants 3 years.

        • Placidin

Agree, don’t like a 3 year commitment with him. Can’t trust him that far out. He is excellent defensively though.

  • GAParkins

I like the Saltalamacchia trade, and I think the trade for Furcal was pretty good, but I’m not a fan to the Garrett Jones deal. I really think Morrison is going to have a season that offsets his last two. Re-normalizing from two seasons of injury-related regression.

    • Chris Logel

My only concern is if he doesn’t have a good year. Right now, we have the injury as an excuse, if he doesn’t return to form, we have Jorge Cantu and Gaby Sanchez 3.0. His value won’t nearly be as high. Also his contract is very favorable currently.

    • ehsank24

I could have sworn we signed Salty, not traded for him! ;)

      • GAParkins

Ouch. Busted by the grammar police. Yes, signed and not traded. Thank goodness I didn’t have any speling airs.

  • Chris Logel

In case you missed it, Garret Jones, 2 years 7.5 million dollars.

  • Chris Logel

Torre, LaRussa and Cox all made it into the HOF as managers. Congrats to them.

  • Chris Logel

Just a hypothetical, Yankees trade Alex Rodriguez and top prospect, catcher Gary Sanchez and cash, to the Marlins for Nicolino, Brantley. Who says no?

  • Chris Logel

What did you guys think about the “trades” that we negotiatied with the editors of the other sites involving LoMo? I think the one where we received Starlin Castro was probably the strongest.

  • Chris Logel

For anyone interested in Miami possibly acquiring Roy Halladay, it is reported that he is retiring.

    • ehsank24

I would have liked to see Roy Halladay on the team.

      • Chris Logel

Would have been interesting, thats for sure.

  • Chris Logel

Great career, for a time, the best pitcher in baseball.

  • ehsank24

Matt Kemp and $58M for Justin Nicolino, who says no?

    • Chris Logel

I wouldn’t be able to sign the deal fast enough.

  • Chris Logel

It is also being reported that he will sign a one day contract with Toronto so he can retire a Blue Jay

  • Chris Logel

Just a reminder, if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

  • Chris Logel

Ken Rosenthal is reporting that Jeff Francour is looking for a position as a fourth outfielder on the team. He reportedly had eye surgery and is dropping his bat weight.

  • Chris Logel

It looks like the Yankees are going to place a plaque of Nelson Mandela in Monument Park. I know that he was a great man, just not sure what contributions he made, if any, to the Yankees?

    • GAParkins

Maybe you didn’t realize that Mandela, in addition to his unparalleled credentials as a champion of human rights, was a six-time all-star in the Yankees’ SA farm system. Think of him as the South African Domingo Ayala. Truly the first non-Dominican six-tool player. However, the history books will forever note his love of country instead of his baseball genius. The closest American we had would have been Joe DiMaggio, had he elected to continue his military career.

      • Chris Logel

Well that answers my question. Unfortunately for him, due to his affiliation with the Yankees, my opinion of him is forced to be downgraded.

        • GAParkins

Could be worse…Could have been in the Atlanta organization.

  • Chris Logel

Angels officials are stating that Mark Trumbo is in play as a potential trade. It would presumabely take a lot to move him, but it is possible.

  • Chris Logel

The Rangers are also willing to trade Elvis Andrus, but are saying it is going to also take a lot to move him.

  • Chris Logel

I am sure on day 1 everyone will be talking about how expensive some of these players are going to be. That stance should soften as the meetings continue.

  • GAParkins

I really think the Marlins should shell out some money for a plus 3B rental (because Colin Moran) and keep Morrison at least long enough to have him and Jones’ performance determine who gets the 1B job…dump the low performer by the trade deadline.

    • Chris Logel

Interesting play, the only reason to do that is if they think they are going to sign him to a long term contract. That plays out one of two ways, either he plays great over the next two years and we can’t afford him, or he plays badly and we can’t get anything for him. I don’t know if either of those options are great.

      • GAParkins

For now, keep the one that performs best. At worst, they become a rental until a better FA or prospect makes sense. At best, Morrison proves the naysayers wrong and becomes a better-than-average 1B and helps get us ready for a playoff run in ’15/’16. Plus, while it’s irrelevant to front office types, keeping Morrison around would help keep Stanton happier. All of this could be utterly irrelevant, as Morosi just tweeted that the Pirates are “exploring options” wrt Morrison.

  • Chris Logel

Pirates are reportedly interested in possibly acquiring Logan Morrison

    • GAParkins

I still say we keep Morrison. Jones is not clearly enough a better player, and is six years older than Morrison. Hitters peak from 28-32, so last years’ regression by the 32-year-old Jones is more likely to become a trend than Morrison’s last two years, which are attributable to knee problems. Morrison is likely to rebound this year.

      • Chris Logel

They won’t keep Morrison though. They aren’t going to sign the same player 6 years older for 7.5 million and keep Morrison. I think they started getting some pretty solid offers for Morrison and decided to move him but wanted to make sure they had something in place before they did. During our mock trades, we had some pretty good offers from other clubs.

    • GAParkins

Based on his twitter feed, so is Mrs. Morrison.

      • Chris Logel

That is something that I would miss greatly.

  • Chris Logel

Phillies are shopping outfielder Dominic Brown. Looking for starting pitching in return.

    • GAParkins

Him we don’t need. Kemp, maybe. We’d have to dump Ruggiano and Marisnick to get him. Anything we do at this point really should not involve our starting rotation.

      • Chris Logel

I feel we are in an interesting position. Our rotation is pretty solid, we need help in the field, but we don’t want to pay for a rental. The question is, does the front office really care about our record next year? Or are they more interested in the upcoming 3 years?

        • GAParkins

My guess is they have a 2-3 year plan. They’ve got to do something to recover some fans. No bigtime TV deal until 2020, and some bitterness towards the team caused by stadium deal and fire sale. Fan base is damn stubborn. Will take lots of wins to fix the blunders.

  • Chris Logel

We just got word that David Samson and Jeff Conine are in the building at the Winter Meetings.

    • GAParkins

      Hmmm…saw something like that once:

  • Chris Logel

Mets met with Bartolo Colon’s agent today.

  • ehsank24

Slow day in terms of action, plenty of rumors though.

    • GAParkins

It was a pretty busy week last week. I suspect a lull for the clubs to reevaluate the market and re-shaped opponents.

  • ehsank24

How interesting is it that LoMo and Gbay could reunite in Pittsburgh? I’d especially laugh if they have huge production from first and we suck as usual.

  • ehsank24

How do you guys feel about potentially adding Mat Gamel?

    • GAParkins

Concrete glove, knee problems, and a platoon-only bat. Pass.

      • ehsank24

I think the Marlins are moving in the Rays/A’s way. They won’t mind platooning players. That’s what Frisaro said is happening with Jones. Probably will split time with Ruggiano at first.

        • GAParkins

Sure hope they don’t follow the Rays so closely that they wind up re-signing Heath Bell!

          • ehsank24

Heath Bell will probably turn into an All-Star for them.

  • ehsank24

David Cooper signs with the Indians. Guess he’s Bradley Cooper’s younger brother? Can he act?

  • ehsank24

Last night I heard from a good friend of MM that the Marlins FO usually spends most of their time in their hotel room.

  • ehsank24

Looks like Taijun Walker is off limits, including potentially even for David Price. Braves interested in Chris Sale?

  • ehsank24

    From Joel Sherman:

“Exec from team expected to be major Price players says #Rays haven’t pushed hard yet, thinks even possible TB begins season with him”

  • ehsank24

Off Marlins Topic, but the site now exists guys!! http://www.meowgatron.com/

  • ehsank24

Interesting question posed to Juan C Rodriguez on Twitter:

    Juan C. Rodriguez ‏@JCRMarlinsbeat47s

Pass RT @M_Scheer: Would #Marlins move Stanton for Puig straight up? Heard it floated on TV today

    • GAParkins

He’s guessing the Marlins will pass, or he’s passing on commenting? He’s usually pretty direct, but this is a little opaque.

      • ehsank24

I think he’s passing on the deal himself.

        • GAParkins

I would pass. Stanton’s “dissatisfaction” with the Marlins is based on one tweet, and has taken on the weight of Holy Writ. He’s declined to elaborate on any rumors since that tweet. Also, he’s a whole lot more disciplined outfielder than Puig. Mental error rate is waay lower.

          • ehsank24

Stanton also did have a positive tweet when the team signed Saltalamacchia

  • ehsank24

Marlins about to make a move?

Salty press conference in just over 5 mins. Whose going to be watching on MLB Network? I am stuck at work, I cannot :(

  • ehsank24

    Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi6s
Reported earlier that Pirates are pursuing Logan Morrison. They aren’t alone. Rays are involved too.

    • Ivan

i heard there were like 5 teams intersted. i guess Red sox are out but Brewers should still be in, right?

      • ehsank24

Brewers seem more interested in resigning Corey Hart, but I wouldn’t count them out.

  • ehsank24

Salty is officially #39 for the Miami Marlins.

  • ehsank24

    Very interesting and maybe telling?

    Craig Calcaterra ‏@craigcalcaterra11m

FYI: Jeff Loria is here, but he’s not on the dais with Marlns brass. He’s in a chair with media, trying to be anonymous. Interesting.

Logan Morrision for rays package including sean rodriguez makes some sense positionally. @TBTimes_Rays mentioned

    • Chris Logel

With the Marlins signing the former Rays head scout, I am much more open to trading with them. If anyone knows their players well, it has to be him.

      • ehsank24

Rodriguez and I’d ask for Tim Beckham. Maybe turn his career around.

  • ehsank24

    Jayson Stark ‏@jaysonst20s

    No LoMo for the Rays?

    Joel Sherman ‏@Joelsherman12m

#Rays are not the team close to acquiring Logan Morrison, sources tell me. Never engaged #Marlins on the 1b.

  • ehsank24

    Orioles in on LoMo?

    Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi1m

Orioles were among the teams to check in on Logan Morrison, source says.

#Marlins could be close to trading Logan Morrison. Many teams would have interest.

  • ehsank24

LoMo is NOT going to the Brewers, as of right now:

@Haudricourt: They are not on verge of acquiring him, according to #Brewers GM Doug Melvin.

  • Chris Logel

    Orioles could be the team.

    • ehsank24

Doesn’t seem the trade is as imminent now lol.

      • Chris Logel

It was real exciting for a couple of minutes lol.

    Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal2m

Sources: Chances of Trumbo trade increasing. #Angels more open. #Dbacks pushing. Other teams in, all with improving offers.

  • Chris Logel

The Cubs are interested in Drew Storen on the Nationals. I wouldn’t be dissapointed to see him leave the N.L. East.
