Miami Marlins Winter Meetings: Live Blog, Day 3

After a very, very slow day 2, we start day 3 on a positive note with the official announcement of the signing of Garrett Jones. This signing means that we will resume day 3 of the Logan Morrison trade watch. I personally do not believe that Morrison will be a Marlin by the time the Winter Meetings conclude, but that remains to be seen.

Monday saw the “hot stove” cranked full blast regarding the LoMo situation. Tuesday was much the opposite, as Mark Trumbo heading to Arizona seemed to dominate the headlines and any Morrison trade talk fell by the wayside. I anticipate his trade talk to resume with much more force today, as we heard reports that as many as 10 teams were interested and the offers were getting better.

The interesting thing that remains to be seen is exactly what the Marlins front office is targeting with a Morrison trade. Are they looking for immediate help? Are they looking for major league depth? Are they looking for prospects that could potentially help down the road?

I am hoping it is the latter, as I think a prospect laden haul is just the thing that the Marlins need. If we could get a solid infielder in return, it will be a huge help to our push toward the playoffs in 2 or 3 years. Any immediate help would likely be a waste.

Good Morning! I don’t know about you guys, but I am ready to get day 3 of the Winter Meetings started!

  • Chris Logel

Already some news breaking. Joe Frisario has reported that the Marlins are open to trading Justin Ruggiano.

    • Chris Logel

I would be open to trading Ruggiano. We have a crowded outfield already. This is interesting to me, because this tells me that a Logan Morrison trade may not be a certainty.

  • Chris Logel

Also potentially could deal Greg Dobbs

    • Chris Logel

Not sure that the roster will have room for Dobbs this year. Certainly not in the long-term plans at least.

  • Chris Logel

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask as well.

  • Chris Logel

Conflicting reports about the possibility of the Marlins signing Juan Uribe. One reporter has no chance, one reporter says Marlins are interested.

  • Chris Logel

Let’s play the lineup game with the Marlins current roster.

  • Chris Logel

    Furcal- 2B
    Yelich- CF
    Morrison- LF
    Stanton- RF
    Jones- 1B
    Saltalamacchia- C
    Dietrich- 3B
    Hechavarria- SS

    • Chris Logel

Well as long as we don’t face any left handers, I would say we would be alright. lol

    • Placidin

I think Yelich will lead off with Furcal second. Absolutely no chance Morrison is in LF to start the season IMO. I like that you have Dietrich at 3B and hope the Marlins give him a chance to win the position. I think he could be a nice source of power if given the chance and could form a productive platoon with Lucas.

      • Chris Logel

I think that Morrison will be traded 100%, but as of right now he is not. If somehow he doesn’t get traded, I can’t see him sitting the bench, Possibly Jones in an outfield position maybe left field, the only other thing would be to move Stanton which would be a worse mistake IMO.

        • Placidin

There you go. If LoMo is not traded then Jones goes to LF with LoMo back at 1B. Unfortunately weakening the defense at 2 spots. Marlins have backed themselves into a corner with LoMo, there is just no way he can be on the opening day roster.

  • Chris Logel

Philly appears to really be trying to unload Papelbon, willing to eat a majority of his contract. He has gotten a bad rap as a locker room poisoner.

  • Chris Logel

Omar Infante in some talks with Royals, others…

  • Chris Logel

According to various reports, the Rays are still discussing Logan Morrison, It seems like every 10 minutes their status as in or out changes.

  • Chris Logel

Yankees trying to trade Brett Gardner.

  • Chris Logel

Hearing that the Cubs may be one of the teams interested in LoMo.

  • Chris Logel

Bronson Arroyo is believing that he might be able to get a deal done before Meetings are over. Twins and Reds possibilities according to Heyman.

  • Chris Logel

Keep an eye out for Corey Hart and the Brewers, we are hearing that if Hart doesn’t sign with Milwaukee then they will push hard for LoMo.

  • Chris Logel

Reds trading Brandon Phillips sounds unlikely.

  • Chris Logel

hypothetical trade: Morrison, Nicolino, Alvarez to Cubs for Starlin Castro. Who says no?

    • Ryan

Morrison and Nicolino alone would be too much. Don’t get me wrong, Castro is very talented but he has not progressed defensively like it was thought he would and he is coming off of a very down year. The power has also not come along and people expected it to by now. He also has a pretty big contract for a player that didn’t produce last year. Why would we do the Cubs a favor by clearing a spot for Baez and give them a very large haul too? If this deal was a possibility, the Cubs would have made it already. For a package like this I would ask for something like Baez and Alcantara or Baez and Vogelbach. For Castro I would trade Morrison and a pitcher like Desclafani or Urena but not anything more.

      • Chris Logel

Thanks for the reply! I understand what you are saying. My only thing of note is that Castro is on a very team friendly contract. I believe it is 8 years 60 million. that is pretty solid. I agree that the Cubs don’t have much leverage, but if they have more than one suitor for him, than they regain the leverage. If it was only going to take Morrison and one of the pitchers you mentioned, I think we would be introducing Castro as a Marlin this week already.

  • Chris Logel

Multiple teams are in on Hart so it is not a lock that he returns to Milwaukee, although most have Brewers the leader in the clubhouse.

  • Chris Logel

Morosi is reporting that the Orioles have had discussions with John Axford.

Yes, 330 RT @ErSu343: is Red doing his press conf today at the #WinterMeetings ?
    @Marlins

    • Chris Logel

Looking forward to Redmond’s press conference today!

  • Chris Logel

Thankfully Frisaro says that the Marlins have explored pretty much every third baseman you can think of. Lol, well that’s a relief. So it will be one of those?

  • Chris Logel

Nationals are looking for a LH reliever according to Rosenthal.

  • Andres

So is the press conference about jones or are we getting a 3rd baseman or is lomo gone?

    • Chris Logel

First of all, everyone reading this needs to watch these videos immediately. Second, his presser is just a general Marlins Q and A for reporters.

  • Chris Logel

Nightengale has some Choo numbers at $140 million over 7 years. So that just barely prices him out for the Marlins lol.

  • Chris Logel

Jayson Stark says that Garza may sign within the next 48 hours, Arizona getting a lot of play for him.

  • Chris Logel

Rosenthal now saying that Brandon Phillips is definitely in play for MLB teams.

  • Andres

Uribe still on fish radar along with WSox and Dodgers were will he go?

    • Chris Logel

I don’t think he is going to Miami, He apparently wants a 3 year deal, which Miami shouldn’t give him. If he comes back to 2 years, Marlins may be a player.

      • Andres

i dont think the Sox or Dodgers will take a risk at 3 so he may drop to 2

  • Chris Logel

Miami Marlins in search of relief help as well http://goo.gl/fb/NSZVf

  • Andres

Rumors going around Ruggi and Dobbs trade offers r being listen to

  • Chris Logel

One option that we may see is Delmon Young platooning at first base with Garrett Jones. Marlins interested in Young.

  • Chris Logel

Garza getting a lot action currently according to Heyman. Marlins not thought to be interested.

  • Chris Logel

It looks like the Mariners have joined the Brewers as pursuing Corey Hart.

  • Chris Logel

Andrew Marchand is reporting that Johan Santana has as many as 8 suitors, with the Yankees as one of them.

  • Chris Logel

It looks like the Dodgers are trying to drive the price up on Matt Kemp by now declaring that he is off-limits, presumably for the next 30 minutes, at which time he will be again “on-limit”.

  • Chris Logel

Corey Hart has agreed to a deal with the Mariners, potentially opening up the Marlins to make a trade with the Brewers for LoMo.

  • Chris Logel

BREAKING: Marlins have traded Logan Morrison to Seattle for Carter Capps.

    • Ivan

wait how does that work? M’s sign Hart and trade for LoMo?

      • Chris Logel

Yes, they signed Corey Hart and traded for Morrison, Presumably one of them will play in the outfield.

        • Ivan

          or DH

          • Chris Logel

Justin Smoak is also on the team as a 1B or DH

  • Chris Logel

I have to admit, I thought we could get more that Capps in return for Morrison

    • Jay

Seriously. The good news is that Capps will be under club control until 2018 and could be a potential closer. Otherwise that HR/9 of 1.8 last season is a little scary. Why weren’t they more patient for a better deal or just keep him?! You know somebody will be injured soon enough and probably only going to have to pay LoMo 1.8M this year. They must be really worried about his body.

      • Ivan

i rather him stay in the ‘pen. we need help there and we have lots of promising starters. both righty and lefty

  • Chris Logel

Capps is a hard throwing right handed relief pitcher. Very wild at times. Was thought of as a very high prospect, really struggled last year and saw his stock fall some.

  • Andres

Lomo is gone. Who is next to join the Fish? Uribe? Chavez? Only time will tell. This will b fun
