The Marlins decided to non-tender Coghlan after he failed to rebound to his former 2009 Rookie of the Year form earlier this off-season. After the team acquired outfielder Brian Bogusevic from the Cubs earlier this off-season, the writing seemed to be on the wall that Coghlan wouldn’t be returning to Miami.
Interestingly enough, Coghlan will have a chance to earn a spot on the Cubs 25-man roster, maybe alongside former Marlin Justin Ruggiano.
