The Miami Marlins broke their four-game losing streak last night against the Washington Nationals.

There were also four games scheduled through the Miami Marlins minor league system. From Florida to Iowa to Louisiana, there was meaningful baseball going down. First, a few notes.

The Baby Cakes placed Joe Gunkel on the seven-day injured list. A few days ago, LHP Dylan Lee was promoted to New Orleans and 1B Micah Brown was sent down from them to the Jupiter Hammerheads.

Jacksonville placed C Santiago Chavez on the seven-day IL, and promoted C B.J. Lopez from Jupiter to the Shrimp to take his place. RHP Tyler Stevens was promoted from Jupiter to Jacksonville as well. C Michael Hernandez was assigned to Jupiter. Cam Baird was assigned to the Hammerheads from GCL. RHP Steven Farnworth was promoted from Clinton to Jupiter, and the Hammerheads placed RHP Edward Cabrera and SS Jose Devers on the IL. Clinton placed RHP Josh Roberson on the IL as well.

RHP Nathan Alexander was promoted from GCL up to the LumberKings, and RHP Tyler Mitzel joined Clinton from the Batavia Muckdogs.

Lukas Schiraldi was released from Jupiter after starting this season allowing five hits and four walks over 3 2/3 innings. The righty reliever joined the team from the Seattle Mariners system for David Phelps, along with Brandon Miller, Brayan Hernandez, and Pablo Lopez.

New Orleans Baby Cakes 4, Omaha Storm Chasers 10

Triple-A Pacific Coast League

Nick Neidert started for the Baby Cakes (7-8) and surrendered six runs in the top of the first inning while collecting only one out. That was enough for Omaha, who went on to outhit the Cakes 12-to-9 with 3,590 in the house at Shrine on Airline.

After Neidert was lifted, the Baby Cakes started to fight back in the bottom of the inning. Peter O’Brien hit a two-run shot to cut the lead to four, then Monte Harrison added a two-run double in the second to make it 6-4.

But that was as close as the Baby Cakes would get. The Chasers piled on four more runs through the rest of the game off of the New Orleans bullpen. They scored one off Brian Moran over 2 2/3 innings, two off Mike Kickham over four innings, and an unearned run off Tommy Eveld in two innings. Eveld struck out three.

O’Brien added a pair of singles to finish the game three-for-four, and Monte Harrison added a single.

Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 2, Birmingham Barons 7

Double-A Southern League

Jordan Yamamoto started and got through five good innings for the Jumbo Shrimp (5-10), letting the Barons cross the plate once while striking out six Birmingham players. He came out for the sixth, and let the first three batters get to base before getting replaced by Kolton Mahoney.

Those three and two more scored in the sixth, enough for Birmingham to take the 7-2 decision with 4,927 in the house at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Jordan Milbrath struck out five over 2 1/3 innings in relief.

Brian Miller hit a single, stole a base, and added a homer, while Justin Twine hit a single and a double. J.C. Millan hit a pair of singles.

Jupiter Hammerheads 1, Bradenton Marauders 7

Advanced-A Florida State League

Jupiter (7-8) and Bradenton played to 557 at LECOM park on Friday night. The Hammerheads scored first on a Micah Brown single in the fourth inning. Bradenton scored the next seven.

Jordan Holloway struck out seven in five innings through his start, and allowed only an unearned run. The other six runs were scored off Daniel Castano over his inning of work.

Nick Fortes led the Sharks with three singles, Connor Grant hit two, and Victor Victor Mesa added a double.

Clinton LumberKings 4, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 3

Single-A Midwest League

The LumberKings (8-6) scored three in the first inning with 606 in attendance at Ashford University Field. They then added an insurance run in the second that would prove the eventual game-winner.

Will Banfield was the hero of the day, with his three-run shot in the top of the first. Demetrius Sims hit an RBI-single in the second base. Jerar Encarnacion kept his average above .400 with a two-for-four game.

Peyton Culbertson gave up two runs in the fourth and struck out three batters, surrendering nine hits and a pair of walks. Recently promoted Tyler Mitzel earned the victory, tossing two shutout innings and striking out four. Alex Vesia earned his first save of the season.
