After dropping his last five decisions, right hander Alex Sanabia tossed 6.1 strong innings, allowing only one run off seven hits, picking up the win. The Marlins scored five runs on eleven hits, led by Justin Ruggiano’s 2 RBI night. Miami did not draw a walk all night against Philadelphia, including the starter Cole Hamels who apparently stormed out of the clubhouse after the game.

Marcell Ozuna opened Miami’s five-run onslaught in the first inning, scoring Adeiny Hechavarria on a single to center. The onslaught was put on hold for five innings, during which Sanabia surrendered a solo home run to Dom Brown.

Perhaps out of guilt for snuffing out the rally with his first inning double play, Justin Ruggiano scored Placido Polanco on a double to centerfield. The score was 2-1 going into the seventh, where Sanabia was pulled with runners on the corners and one out in favor of Ryan Webb. Webb stamped out the Philadelphia scare with a flyout and groundout.

Miami piled out three more runs on the righty Justin De Fratus in the eighth inning. A Ruggiano single scored Polanco once again. Nick Green scored Marcell Ozuna and Ruggiano on a single of his own.

A.J.
With the win, Miami moves to 13-32, a cool 13.5 games behind the NL East leaders, the Atlanta Braves. Game two of this series features Jose Fernandez hosting recently recalled Tyler Cloyd. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 ET.

EDIT:

Hey, cool. Alex Sanabia was spitballin’.

The Marlins have been swept by the Cincinnati Reds. Miami has dropped six of the seven appearances against Joey Votto and company, twice losing in extra innings. The Reds are a quality team, sitting second in the in the NL Central behind the best team in the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals. But make no mistake, this Miami team didn’t look great this series. The offense’s best night mustered up only three runs, despite racking up at least six hits in each game. Here are some links to other bad news concerning the Miami Marlins.

After being swept by the San Diego Padres this week, the promotion of infielder Derek Dietrich and Marlins Park’s new policy dominated Marlin headlines. Miami continued their pattern of sooner-than-expected promotions with the call up of Derek Dietrich from AA-Jacksonville Wednesday. The Marlins would prefer the promotion come at more favorable conditions, as Dietrich was penciled in due to injury to Chris Valaika. After their road trip to Los Angeles this weekend, Dietrich and the Marlins can expect some new park policies when they return home the 14th.

When the team returns to Miami for their next home stand, fans at Marlins Park will be treated to a “better fan experience” during the weekdays. Meaning: The upper deck will be closed. Miami has had trouble filling the stadium with fans since the season began, and going 5-25 hasn’t helped. A more cozy setting during the week should improve customer service for the fans at the game.Dietrich becomes latest Marlins prospect to get call-up after injury | Miami Herald

Manny Navarro has the story on Derek Dietrich’s promotion Wednesday.
I really can’t get enough of these, “fans-are-upset” articles. One reason is because they usually offer some bitter laughs at your favorite baseball team’s expense. The next reason is that when people stop talking about this, the problem won’t go away. The more articles like Mike Oz’s at Yahoo! Sports compiling rightfully frustrated fans, the better.

It looks as if 23-year old infielder Derek Dietrich will be called up from AA-Jacksonville this evening and start at second base for the Marlins. According to the Saint Ignatius High School Sports twitter account (Dietrich’s alma mater) the Marlins made the call and penciled him in tonight’s lineup.

Saint Ignatius alum Derek Dietrich ’07 was called up this morning by the <s>@</s>Marlins and will make his major league debut tonight at 2nd base.

As noted by Joe Frisaro of Fish Pond, Dietrich is not in tonight’s lineup for the Jacksonville Suns.

No Derek Dietrich in <s>#</s>Suns lineup. Could he be on his way to join <s>#</s>Marlins

The Marlins acquired Dietrich from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Yunel Escobar in December. He’s currently hitting .282/.408/.505 in Jacksonville.

The call up comes after Chris Valaika fractured his left radius in last night’s loss to the San Diego Padres and becoming the 11th player on Miami’s disabled list.

Derek Dietrich follows fellow prospects Marcell Ozuna and Jose Fernandez to be called up from AA-Jacksonville this season. The lefty could split time at second base with Nick Green. Dietrich isn’t projected to be a regular Major Leaguer, but there is value in a hit-first middle infielder, especially one who punishes righties.

Juan C. Rodriguez of the Sun-Sentinel and Marlins.com beat writer Joe Frisaro confirmed the news on his Twitter handle:

Dietrich selected. Starting at second for #Marlins today.

Expect a corresponding move to be announced shortly to accommodate Dietrich on the Marlins 40-man roster. Update 2:35 PM: Chris Valaika has been placed on the 15 day DL, team transfers Casey Kotchman to 60-day DL, and select the contract of second baseman Derek Dietrich from the Jacksonville Suns.

In last night’s west coast night cap matchup between the Miami Marlins and the San Deigo Padres, the Marlins ecently surging offense was put to rest by San Diego’s Andrew Cashner. Cashner (2-2) pitched 7.1 scoreless innings, with the Marlins managing just four hits and three walks against him. Wade LeBlanc (0-5) took the hill for the Marlins. LeBlanc allowed four runs on four hits and three walks. He nearly stranded a first-inning runner until an ugly Rob Brantly error allowed a run. LeBlanc allowed runners in each of his innings except the fifth.

The Marlins offense struggled to put together many scoring threats, going down in order three innings and grounding into two double plays. Miami had only one runner on third base the entire game.

After Everth Cabrera scored on an ugly error from Brantly, the score was 1-0 Padres going into the second inning. Second basemen Jedd Gyorko led off the inning with a home run pushing the lead to 2-0.

Wade LeBlanc walked catcher Nick Hundley in the fourth inning. Hundley advanced to second on a sac bunt from Cashner, and scored on a Chris Denorfia single, barely sliding under Brantly’s tag at home after an excellent throw from Marcell Ozunain right. The Padres tested Ozuna’s arm the next at bat. Denorfia, who had advanced to second on Ozuna’s previous throw, was waved home on a Everth Cabrera single to right. Despite another bullet from Ozuna, it wasn’t in time and the Padres extended the lead to 4-0.

Tom Koehler relieved LeBlanc in the sixth, retiring the Padres in order. Koehler walked Everth Cabrera in the seventh, who then stole second and scored on a Chase Headley double. Padres led 5-0 for the rest of the game.

Alex Sanabia and the Marlins will try to salvage the series tonight at 10:10 ET.
