Despite the wishful thinking of baseball fans everywhere, it appears that the Miami Marlins are not actively shopping Giancarlo Stanton at the moment. Instead, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman, Marlins President of Baseball Operations Larry Beinfest says he’s on a search to add power to the team’s lineup – particularly to support Stanton, not replace him.

Miami wants to add some pop to their lineup to support Giancarlo Stanton, not replace him. (Image Credit: Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE)

The desire to add some pop to the Marlins lineup comes as no surprise. Aside from Stanton, who’s topped 30+ home runs each of the past two seasons, the team is only returning a pair of players from last season who hit more than double-digit home runs – outfielders Justin Ruggiano and Logan Morrison, both of whom did so in part-time duty but who also have undefined roles heading into 2013. In fact, nearly the entire Marlins roster remains in a state of flux after the team completed the blockbuster 12-player trade with the Toronto Blue Jays just two weeks ago. Despite numerous rumblings, it’s unclear who the team has been shopping and who they’d consider moving, thus making any efforts to project their 2013 roster nearly impossible.

Miami currently has holes across the diamond, as the team’s starters seem clear at only a handful of positions right now. If the season were to begin today, it’s likely that Yunel Escobar will slide into the lineup behind Stanton. It’s a proposition that doesn’t exactly scream “intimidating” to opposing pitchers and one that the Marlins are clearly not overly thrilled about, considering the team has reportedly already started to shop Escobar around the league. Should the Marlins enter the season with no true support in place, Stanton is likely to be pitched around constantly – limiting the Marlins overall offensive success and likely further infuriating an already unhappy face of the franchise.

Last week’s blockbuster trade may still be resonating across the baseball landscape since it took so long to become official, but it would appear as though the Miami Marlins weren’t wasting any time trying to continue with other moves. Yahoo!’s Jeff Passan reports that the team has been shopping newly-acquired shortstop Yunel Escobar for much of the past week.

It’s no surprise that Escobar could be on the move again.

Yunel Escobar’s tenure as a member of the Marlins may prove to be a brief one. (Image Credit: Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE)

One one hand, he’s slated to earn just $5 Million this coming season, with a pair of team options for 2014 and 2015 for the same amount. Such a team friendly deal could appeal to a number of teams in need of upgrades at shortstop. Escobar is just 30 years old, so he could/should be somewhat serviceable for the next three seasons at a relatively affordable cost. Of course, on the other hand, this is Miami and suddenly anyone making anything over the league minimum is deemed expensive, thus the natural expectation that he could be moved in another deal.

He’s also a .282/.353/.390 hitter over six seasons in the Major Leagues, with decent but not spectacular defensive abilities. Escobar has been a shortstop for his whole career, aside from 22 games at third base during his rookie season in Atlanta. Should be remain in Miami, it’s unlikely that he’ll be the team’s starting shortstop with Adeiny Hechavarria in the picture, meaning Escobar would need to move either to third base or into a utility role in order to earn any playing time for the Marlins. It would appear that the team is uncomfortable with such an idea if we’re to believe Passan’s Tweet.

There are no shortage of teams who could have interest in Escobar, depending on the cost, as an upgrade at shortstop. Oakland has been linked to him in the past and it’s well-known that the Diamondbacks and Red Sox are evaluating the market. Detroit, New York, and others could all potential come into play as well.

The deal has been reported to be a one year contract worth $1.6 Million.

The 35 year old saw a significant amount of playing time for the Phillies last season, earning 439 plate appearances after joining the team on a minor league contract prior to the season. He’d bat .307/.351/.371 on the year, adding 37 stolen bases and proving reliable defensively. Over his 13 year Major League career he’s hit a combined .297/.346/.363 in 7,950 plate appearances, with 591 stolen bases. From 2003-2005 Pierre was entrenched as the Marlins center fielder, perhaps the best stretch of his career. He hit a collective .303/.354/.378 during that span. He led the league with 63 stolen bases in 2003, finishing 10th in NL MVP voting, and with 221 hits in 2004.

As Axisa points out, bringing Pierre aboard could be an effort to address the lack of a top-of-the-order hitter on the lineup after this week’s trade of Jose Reyes and Emilio Bonifacio to Toronto. Pierre has spent the better part of his career hitting out of the leadoff spot and proved this past season that there is still something left in the tank on the base paths.

Coupled with a number of other hirings made in the past week, Mike Redmond has finished filling out his coaching staff with the Miami Marlins as the team confirmed the hiring of Chuck Hernandez to be the team’s new Pitching Coach. Hernandez has previously served in the same role for the Tampa Bay Rays, Detroit Tigers, and Los Angeles Angels.

Most recently he was serving as the Assistant Coach at the University of South Florida.

Hernandez pitched in the minor leagues from 1979 through 1983, posting a 27-33 record and 4.27 ERA over 459.2 innings in the New York Yankees organization. He made only five starts at Double-A or higher.

This hiring paired with the decision to bring aboard Rob Leary as Bench Coach have now filled out Redmond’s coaching staff for the Marlins, going along with Tino Martinez as Hitting Coach, Perry Hill as First Base Coach, Joe Espada as Third Base Coach, and Reid Cornelius as Bullpen Coach. Combined, according to Aaron Gleeman, the entire group will make less than what the Marlins will still be paying Ozzie Guillen to not manage the team next season.
