1997 v. 2003: Second Basemen
Today we will start the third segment of the Florida Marlins 1997 v. 2003 World Series segment. Lets take a look at the two second basement from those teams today, Luis Castillo and Craig Counsell. The ironic thing about this question is that the Marlins starting second baseman to begin the 1997 season was actually Castillo. However, after a season filled with struggles for the youngster, the Marlins decided to demote Castillo and made a trade for Counsell. On July 27, Craig Counsell was traded by the Colorado Rockies to the Florida Marlins for Mark Hutton. Counsell of course became a Marlins hero in the World [...]

Here is a look at the results of the best first basemen voted by the fans: Question Poll Answers Answer No. Answer Text No. Of Votes Answer 1 3 Answer 2 5 Total Votes: 8 Total Voters: 8 This was a lot closer then I had anticipated. Derrick Lee clearly had the better numbers. It probably has a lot to do with the fan sentiment of Jeff Conine. [...]
1997 v. 2003: The Catchers
Sorry about the delay of this post. I was going to have it up yesterday, but I got called into work and had a ton of work to do for school. We will go ahead and look at the two catchers from the two Florida Marlins World Series teams today. The Marlins catcher in 1997 is the homegrown, original Marlins draftee, Charles Johnson. The 2003 was anchored by January free agent addition in Ivan Rodriguez. Obviously both players were brought into the Marlins championship teams in different manners. Charles Johnson played baseball at the University of Miami before he was [...]
1997 v. 2003?
The Florida Marlins won two championships in their history. The Miami Marlins have never played a game. Whether or not Marlins owner Jeffery Loria wants to admit it or not, the “Florida” part of Marlins history is very important to all Marlins fans. There were some hard times to endure, but for the most part, fans enjoyed watching these young Marlins teams. Over the next couple of weeks, I will be taking a look at the Marlins rosters of the 1997 and 2003 World Series teams and comparing them. I will provide statistical background on each player and then I [...]
Marlins All-Time Team (Pitchers)
On Wednesday I made my All-Time Marlins Team (Batting). For the most part, the fans picked the same team as me. Today, I will take a look at what I believe the Marlins All-Time Team (Pitching) is. Ace: #55 Josh Johnson Johnson is my ace of the Marlins staff. When he is healthy, he has been one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. He is still young, but has already made a major mark on the Florida Marlins. Let’s hope he is healthy in 2012. #27 Kevin Brown Brown recorded the franchise’s second no-hitter in [...]
Marlins All-Time Team
With today being the last game ever for the Florida Marlins, becoming the Miami Marlins next season. The Marlins are set to name their all-time team after the game. This will be along with other festivities, including many former Marlins taking the field. Without any further ado, I will name my all-time Marlins team based on on my favorite Marlins of all time. This will not be statistically based at all. Just a fun look at my favorite Marlins position-by-position. Catcher: #7 Ivan Rodriguez I gave a lot of consideration to Charles Johnson, but this play by Pudge put him [...]
History: Revisiting the 2003 NLDS Game Four
MLB.com is airing their 20 Greatest Games of the past 50 seasons, and the Marlins had three games nominated among their top 50 games. You can check out all the nominated games in that link, but the three involving the Fish were not surprising; MLB.com chose Game 7 of the 1997 World Series against the Cleveland Indians, Game 4 of the 2003 NLDS against the San Francisco Giants, and the forever-infamous Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS against the Chicago Cubs. Last offseason, I started the Revisting 2003 series, and while I have had time constraints that have held me [...]
Revisiting ’03: Marlins player win/loss records
Recently, Tom Tango posted a methodology that allows you convert player performance via WPA or WAR into player win/loss records. When he encouraged us to go ahead and do this for our own favorite teams, I immediately thought of the 2003 Marlins, so I figured I’d go ahead and make this part of Revisiting ’03. Essentially, this methodology is a way to break down player contributions in terms of wins and losses. Using WPA ensures that you get the entire team total to add up to the team’s win-loss record, but then you cannot adjust for things like position and [...]
