Down on the Farm Report for the Miami Marlins: June 22nd:

The Zephyrs are shutout by the Sounds, Aaron Dudley goes deep twice for the Suns in their win over the Stars, Urena and the Hammerheads were blown out by the Miracle,

Triple-A:

New Orleans Zephyrs (38-39)  vs. Nashville Sounds (26-50)

Loss 1-0

Kyle Skipworth, C: 2-for-3

Jake Smolinski, LF: 1-for-2, BB

Doug Mathis, SP: 5.2 IP, 4 H, ER, 2 BB, 6 SO

Adam Reifer, RP: 1.1 IP, 2 BB, SO

The Zephyrs offense could not mount any offense, despite the team’s 8 hits on the day. All 8 of the Zephyrs hits went for singles on the day. Catcher and former first round pick Kyle Skipworth collected two hits on the game and raised his batting average to .160 for the season. In his past ten games, Skipworth is hitting .222, which is a major improvement for him.

Double-A:

Huntsville Stars (30-42) @ Jacksonville Suns (37-34)

Win 6-2

Kyle Jensen, RF: 2-for-4, 2 2B (16), RBI, SO

Aaron Dudley, 1B: 2-for-4, 2 HR (2), 4 RBI, 2 R

Robert Morey, SP: 9.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, ER, 4 SO, HR

Robert Morey decided that when he was going to pitch an outing longer than 5 innings, he would go all the way. Morey tossed a complete game for the Suns and had the Stars hitters outmatched, as he only allowed five hits all game long. Aaron Dudley hit his first two homers of the season, starting at first base.

High Class A:

Jupiter Hammerheads (37-34) @ Fort Myers Miracle (47-23)

Loss 7-1

Wilfredo Gimenez, C: 2-for-4, 2B (7), SO

Ross Wilson, 2B: 1-for-3, BB

Jose Urena, SP: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, BB, 4 SO

Ronald Barnes, RP: 2.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 SO, BB, HR

The Hammerheads offense was limited to just one run on five hits and starter Jose Urena did not have his best stuff. Urena allowed 8 baserunners in his five innings of work and was constantly pitching out of trouble. His offense did him no favors as well.

Low Class A:

Greensboro Grasshoppers (33-38) @ Hickory Crawdads (41-31)

Win 7-6

Anthony Gomez, 2B: 2-for-5, 2B (11), HR (4), 3 RBI

Yordy Cabrera, 3B: 2-for-5, HR (10), RBI

Austin Brice, SP: 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 SO

Matt Milroy, RP: 2.0 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 SO

Brice had his best start of the 2013 season, throwing five no-hit innings and striking out seven hitters. Brice received plenty of run support, as the Grasshoppers put 5 runs on the board in the second inning. Yordy Cabrera hit his tenth homer of the season and is starting to tap into his home run potential scouts raved about.

Short-Season:

Mahoning Valley Scrappers (2-4) @ Batavia Muckdogs (3-3)

Win 2-1

Austin Dean, LF: 1-for-4, 3B (3)

J.T. Riddle, 3B: 2-for-3, BB, RBI

Ryan Newell, SP: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K

Casey McCarthy, RP: 1.1 IP, H, 3 SO

Newell, a former seventh round pick from 2012, struck out eight hitters in his impressive six innings of work. He limited the Scrappers to just one run on three hits and did not walk a single hitter. Ryan is known for an advanced fastball and showed that off on Sunday. Six games into the season, Austin Dean has already collected three triples, more than he had all of last season.

Rookie:

GCL Marlins (1-1) @ GCL Cardinals (1-1)

Loss 5-0

Miles Williams, LF: 1-for-1, 2 BB

Gabriel Castellanos, SP: 3 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K

Esmerling De La Rosa, RP: 2.0 IP, 2 H, ER, BB, 3 SO

Gabriel Castellanos struck out seven Cardinals and did not allow a hit. Unfortunately, he picked up the loss, as the Marlins lineup collected only one hit and could not put any runs on the scoreboard.
