Down On The Farm Miami Marlins Daily Report: July 5th
Triple-A:
Oklahoma City RedHawks (47-41) @ New Orleans Zephyrs (43-46)
Joe Mahoney, 1B: 2-for-4, HR (1), 2 R, RBI
Kyle Skipworth, C: 2-for-3, 2B (7), 3 RBI
Duane Below, SP: 6.0 IP, 5 H, BB, 6 SO
Jonathan Albaladejo, RP: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 4 SO
Joe Mahoney, Kyle Skipworth, and Matt Downs collected two hits a piece and Mahoney hit his first season with the Zephyrs 4-0 win. Duane Below pitched six strong shutout innings and is a prime candidate to be called up to make a spot start or two when Ricky Nolasco is eventually dealt.
Double-A:
Jacksonville Suns (43-40) @ Chattanooga Lookouts (43-43)
Suns trail 1-0, Game to resume 7/6
Note: Chris Reed, a prospect that has come up in trade discussions for Ricky Nolasco started this game and struck out nine over four innings. The Marlins scouts certainly were taking note of that.
High Class A:
Jupiter Hammerheads (42-40) @ St. Lucie Mets (43-38)
Christian Yelich, CF: 1-for-2, HR (2), 2 R, RBI, 2 BB
Isaac Galloway, RF: 1-for-4, 2B (22), R, SO
Andrew Heaney, SP: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 7 SO
Nick Wittgren, RP: 1.0 IP, H, SV (16)
Yelich continued his rehab stint with the Hammerheads with a home run for the second straight day. Yelich has collected 9 hits in his 30 rehab at bats between the GCL Marlins and the Hammerheads. Andrew Heaney pitched a solid game, striking out seven hitters in his six innings of work without allowing a walk. The Marlins first round pick from a season ago has a 1.56 ERA and has struck out 51 hitters in 40 2/3 innings.
Low Class A:
Lakewood BlueClaws (30-53) @ Greensboro Grasshoppers (41-43)
Viosergy Rosa, DH: 1-for-3, HR (18), 3 RBI, R, SO
Anthony Gomez, SS: 2-for-4, R
Austin Brice, SP: 5.0 IP, 11 H, 5 ER, 4 SO, HR
Daniel Oliver, RP: 2.2 IP, 4 H, ER, 2 BB, 3 SO
Brice has walked 55 hitters and struck out just 60 in 65 innings of work. On Friday he was able to avoid walking any hitters, but allowed five runs on 11 hits in just five innings of work. His season ERA ballooned to 6.06 after the game. Disappointing might be an understatement for Brice’s season. Luckily for him, the team was able to rally and win on a walk-off single by Yefri Perez.
New York-Penn League:
Batavia Muckdogs (8-8) @ State College Spikes (10-8)
Avery Romero, DH: 2-for-4, 2 2B (5), RBI
Austin Dean, LF: 2-f0r-4, R, BB
Jarlin Garcia, SP: 4.2 IP, 5 H, ER, BB, 4 SO
Colby Suggs, RP: 1.0 IP, H, SO
Avery Romero collected two more doubles in the game and raised his season slash line to .373/.422/.508 in 59 at bats. He is proving to be worth the hype he received for his hitting coming out of high school last season. Colby Suggs collected his first professional save, striking out his sixth hitter of the season. Suggs was the 73rd overall pick in the MLB draft last month.
