Down On The Farm Miami Marlins Daily Report: July 8th
Triple-A:
Iowa Cubs (47-45) @ New Orleans Zephyrs (43-48)
Gorkys Hernandez, CF: 1-for-3, HR (3), R, RBI, BB
Gil Velazquez, 2-for-4, RBI
Tom Koehler, SP: 6.0 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, HR
Adam Reifer, RP: 1.0 IP, H, SO
Koehler carried his struggles of late from the majors to New Orleans, as the Iowa Cubs were able to torch him for five runs on nine hits in his six innings of work. They did most of their damage, scoring four of the five runs in the third inning. The Z’s dropped to five games below .500 for the season.
Double-A:
Jacksonville Suns (43-42) @ Chattanooga Lookouts (45-43)
Jake Marisnick, CF: 1-for-4, SO
Anthony DeSclafani, SP: 1-for-2, SO
3.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO
Bryan Evans, RP: 2.2 IP, 3 H, ER, 5 SO
Despite combining to strikeout 10 Lookout hitters between DeSclafani and Evans, the Suns offense was not able to put anything on the scoreboard and were shut out. The loss dropped them to just one game above .500 for the season.
Jacksonville Suns (44-42) @ Chattanooga Lookouts (45-44)
Jake Marisnick, CF: 3-for-5, 2 R, 2 RBI
Noah Perio, 2B: 3-for-4, 2B (6), R, 2 RBI
Jay Jackson, SP: 5.0 IP, 4 H, ER, BB, 5 SO
Michael Brady, RP: 0.2 IP, 2 SO
A strong start from Jay Jackson and another huge offensive output by Marisnick led the Suns to a 9-3 victory over the Lookouts to earn the double header split. Marisnick improved his season slash line to .295/.362/.498, making his promotion case even more compelling.
High Class A:
Palm Beach Cardinals (39-46) @ Jupiter Hammerheads (43-42)
Brent Keys, LF: 1-for-4, 2B (6), R
Christian Yelich, CF: 1-for-3, RBI, BB, SO
Jose Urena, SP: 5.2 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB, 7 SO
James Nygren, RP: 2.1 IP, H, 4 SO
Urena had an intriguing start, as he was able to strike out seven in 5 2/3 innings, but also surrendered 10 hits and four runs (three earned). For the most part, Urena has been consistent in 2013, so we can right this off as a bad night. Yelich drove in the lone run for the Hammerheads in this one.
Low Class A:
Greensboro Grasshoppers (41-45)
Scheduled Off Day
New York-Penn League:
Batavia Muckdogs (5-5) @ Jamestown Jammers (5-5)
Win 5-4 (Makeup of June 27th)
Justin Bohn, SS: 2-for-5, RBI, R
Chad Wallach, C: 2-f0r-3, R, BB
Ryan Newell, SP: 7.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 SO
Casey McCarthy, RP: 2.0 IP, H, 2 BB
Jamestown Jammers (13-8) @ Batavia Muckdogs (10-10)
Austin Dean, LF: 2-for-3, R
Avery Romero, 2B: 1-for-2, 2 RBI
Dane Stone, SP: 3.0 IP, H, BB, 2 SO
Colby Suggs, RP: 1.2 IP, 2 SO
Suggs has now throw 5 2/3 innings for the Muckdogs and struck out eight hitters since being drafted last month. He has limited base runners, allowing just three (2 hits, 1 walk) in his work so far. The Muckdogs double header sweep pulled them back to .500 for the season.
Gulf Coast League:
Gulf Coast Mets (3-10) vs Gulf Coast Marlins (7-7)
Miles Williams, LF: 1-for-2, 2B (5), 2 R, RBI, BB
Victor Castro, RF: 1-for-2, 2B (2), RBI
Adam Westmoreland, SP: 2.0 IP, 2 H, R, 2 SO
Sam Alvis, RP: 1.0 IP
Gulf Coast Mets (3-11) vs Gulf Coast Marlins (8-7)
Ron Miller, DH: 2-for-3, 2B (4), R, RBI
Joel Jimenez, C: 1-for-2, 2B (2), RBI, BB
Domingo German, SP: 4.0 IP, 5 H, ER, 5 SO
Scott Maine, RP: 1.0 IP, SO, SV (3)
Both the Mets and Marlins picked up a win a piece to even the doubleheader, with the Marlins coming out on top in the second game. Scott Maine continues to pitch in the GCL and has dominated the hitters thus far. He is experienced and in his 30’s, so that is an unfair advantage.
