Uniforms? Check! Players? Check! Stadium? Check! Name of the Team? Check! Opening Day date set? Check! Coach? Check! What was missing? Welcome to the Greatest Moment in Marlins History, moment 139. By February 25, 1993 the Marlins were all but ready to begin their baseball dreams but something was missing. What was missing? Billy the Marlin!
On February 25,1993 the Marlins introduced Billy to the world. The reason that Billy was chosen as the mascot? According to the Marlins staff it was because of his “cunning and great competitive nature, but most of all for his outstanding sense of humor and great rapport with baseball fans of all ages.” The name Billy came from Wayne Huizenga because a marlin is a type of billfish. What a great addition to the team Billy has been; he is always a blast to watch at games. Also those different costumes he has are so much fun. I’ve seen Billy in a Jedi outfit, Elvis, “Cuban” outfit, and my personnel favorite, Hulk Hogan!
