Miami Marlins Farm Report: Catching up On Weekend Games

facebooktwitterreddit

Did not have a chance to get to this over the weekend and yesterday, so I wanted to catch everyone up today on the Miami Marlins affiliates minor league games over the weekend. All 4 teams were in action each day and played to mix results.

Of course, some of the players changed this week as well, with Jose Urena, J.T. Realmuto, Reid Brignac, and Carter Capps all being called up to the majors due to injuries.

Here’s what happened over the weekend:

Triple-A: New Orleans Zephyrs (1-4)

Friday: W 4-1

Saturday: L 1-5

Sunday: L 0-4

Monday: L 1-4

Hitting Statistics:

Jordany Valdespin: .500/.526/.688, 1 2B, 1 3B

J.T. Realmuto: .385/.385/.385

Derek Dietrich: .263/.333/.474, 1 2B, 1 HR

Reid Brignac: .200/.308/.200

Justin Bour: .200/.238/.200

Pitching Statistics:

Adam Conley: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 SO, 2 BB, 1 HRA, 6.47 FIP

Jose Urena: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 5 SO, 1 BB, 3.31 FIP

Andre Rienzo: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 SO, 1 BB, 2.97 FIP

Justin Nicolino: 4.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 SO, 0 BB, 1 HRA, 3.33 FIP

Rough first week for the Hammerheads, dropping 4 of the 5 games they played. On a good note, minus Adam Conley, the Zephyrs rotation performed pretty well. Hopefully that trend continues, as the Marlins seem like they will need some help at the major league level at some point.

Tuesday Pitching Matchup:

Iowa Cubs: Donn Roach, RHP (6.75 ERA) vs New Orleans Zephyrs: Justin Nicolino, LHP (3.86 ERA)

Double-A: Jacksonville Suns (3-1)

Friday: W 7-0

Saturday: W 3-1

Sunday: W 4-1

Monday: Postponed

Hitting Statistics:

Matt Juengel : ..316/.316/.632, 1 HR, 1 2B, 1 3B

Austin Nola: .267/.316/.467, 1 HR

Zack Cox: .235/.316/.294, 1 2B

Isaac Galloway: .222/.222/.556, 1 2B, 1 3B

Viosergy Rosa: .143/.250/.143

Pitching Statistics:

Trevor Williams: 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 9 SO, 0 BB, 0.16 FIP

Austin Brice: 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 5 SO, 2 BB

Kendry Flores: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 SO, 2 BB, 3.16 FIP

Jake Esch: 5.1 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 6 SO, 2 BB, 2.03 FIP

For the Suns, they could not have a better scripted opening week, winning all three games after dropping the first one. Their pitching staff was on fire, allowing just 5 runs over the first four games. Good start for the defending Southern League champions.

The game on Monday was postponed after a 7-inning tie rain delay. The game will not be made up, which is unfortunate for Austin Brice, as he enjoyed an excellent start, throwing 5 shutout innings, allowing one hit, walking two, and striking out five hitters.

Tuesday Pitching Matchup:

Montgomery Biscuits: Jamie Shultz, RHP (0-0, 3.86) vs Jacksonville Suns: Trevor Williams, LHP (0.00 ERA)

Class A Advanced: Jupiter Hammerheads (3-2)

Friday: L 3-4

Saturday: L 3-6

Sunday: W 4-2

Monday: W 8-1

Brian Anderson: .263/.333/.368, 2 2B

Felix Munoz: .231/.375/.231

Pitching Statistics:

Chris Sadberry: 6.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 4 SO, 0 BB, 0.16 FIP

Scott Lyman: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 SO, 2 BB

Ryan Newell: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 6 SO, 0 BB, FIP

Jarlin Garcia: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 1  ER, 4 SO, 3 BB, 2.03 FIP

The Hammerheads are off to a nice start, winning 3 of their first 5 games of the season. They’ve done so behind strong pitching and decent hitting. Two of the better hitting prospects, in Avery Romero and Brain Anderson, are off to decent starts so far.

Ryan Newell and Jarlin Garcia have both shown promises as pitching prospects, with Jarlin being rated as an underrated sleeper prospect last season by many prospect people. Hopefully this is the season he breaks out.

Tuesday Pitching Matchup:

Clearwater Threshers: TBD vs Jupiter Hammerheads: Ryan Newell, RHP (1.80 ERA)

Class A: Greensboro Grasshoppers (0-1)

Friday: W 10-2

Saturday: L 1-3

Sunday: L 5-8

Monday: L 1-4

Hitting Statistics:

Arturo Rodriguez: .500/.545/.600, 1 2B

K.J. Woods: .500/.667/1.000, 1 2B

Mason Davis: .294/.400/.471, 1 2B, 1 3B

Isael Soto: .143/.143/.294

Justin Twine: .100/.100/.150, 1 2B

Pitching Statistics:

Tyler Kolek: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 SO, 2 BB, 4.62 FIP

Ben Holmes: 7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 3 SO, 3 BB, 3.90 FIP

Luis Castillo: 3.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 SO, 0 BB, 0.97 FIP

Colby Suggs: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 SO, 0 BB, 1.47 FIP

Rough start to the season for the Grasshoppers and the Miami Marlins first round pick from 2014, Tyler Kolek. While those results are upsetting to see, keep in mind most players at this level as inexperienced as Kolek tend to struggle. Down in this level, it’s more important to see he gets his work done and avoids injury.

As he moves up the latter, then his minor league numbers will start meaning more. I wouldn’t worry about his numbers at this level. The same could be said about the other prospects down here for the first time. Luis Castillo, acquired in the Casey McGehee trade, is repeating the level.

No idea why Colby Suggs is pitching down in Single-A.

Tuesday Pitching Matchup:

Greensboro Grasshoppers: TBD vs Lakewood BlueClaws: Elniery Garcia, LHP (0.00 ERA)
