Coming off a series sweep of the Washington Nationals and a 5-game overall winning streak, the New York Mets came to town on Monday. The Mets beat the Marlins 3-1 and improved to 5-0 against the Miami Marlins in 2015.

Final. 1. 82. 3. 3

Pace of play a problem? Not for the Miami Marlins and New York Mets on Monday night. The two teams played a game that wrapped up in under two hours.

Neither team mustered much offense until the last two inning, as both Jarred Cosart (Marlins) and Dillon Gee (Mets), were in control of the game the majority of the night.

Cosart piched 8 scoreless innings, allowing just 3 hits, but he walked three and struck out just two. Cosart was at 93 pitches when he was lifted after his 8th inning, but manager Mike Redmond‘s decision to pull Cosart worked out for the Marlins, for a short time.

In the bottom of the eight inning, Red decided to pinch hit Justin Bour in Cosart’s place, with two outs in the inning. The decision paid off, as Bour singled to get on board. He was then pinch ran for by Reid Brignac, who smartly advanced to third on a Dee Gordon single. Martin Prado drove in Brignac to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead.

Enter Steve Cishek in the 9th inning, in his third save attempt of the season. Unfortunately, things didn’t fall into place for Cishek, as the first batter of the inning, Juan Lagares, doubled on a fly ball center fielder Marcell Ozuna misjudged. After a Lucas Duda walk and Michael Cuddyer fly out, Daniel Murphy sent a ball into the seats to dissolve the Marlins lead.

With a 3-1 lead, the Mets turned to Jeurys Familia to pitch a 1-2-3 9th inning to give the Mets their 15th win of the season. The Marlins are now 7 games back of the Mets in the National League East.

Now on to our grades.

B-. Stats: 8.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO
Jarred Cosart did not allow any runs on Monday night, limiting a Mets offense that has been hot for a majority of April. However, when you walk more hitters than you strike out, it’s hard to call that start a “great” one. Still this was an encouraging start from Cosart.
. SP. Miami Marlins. JARED COSART

CL. Miami Marlins. STEVE CISHEK. F-. Stats: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 HRA
This was a terrible outing for Steve Cishek, as things didn’t go his way. Marcell Ozuna misjudged a flyball that turned into a double, but Cishek only made things worse by walking the next batter. Marlins killer, Daniel Murphy, made Cishek pay with a 3-run bomb to get the Mets a W. Cishek has struggled, but I’m not worried about him, just yet.

DILLON GEE. B+. Stats: 7.2 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO
Gee enjoyed his best start of the season on Monday night. He was near unhittable for much of the night and was on his way to a Gregg Maddux-like complete game. Unfortunately for him, Justin Bour happened. Bour’s pinch hit in the 8th sparked a rally for the Marlins to take a 1-0 lead.
. SP. Miami Marlins

JUSTIN BOUR. B. Stats: 1/1
The Miami Marlins offense was stuck in neutral all night, until Justin Bour’s pinch hit single sparked a rally for the team in the 9th. Bour was quickly pinch ran for by Reid Brignac and driven in eventually by Martin Prado to earn the Marlins a 1-0 lead.
. PH. Miami Marlins

Stats: 2/4
Another multi-hit effort for Dee Gordon. He won’t maintain his .447 BABIP, which is actually higher than his .411 OBP, all season long. Enjoy his hot streak while you can.
. 2B. Miami Marlins. DEE GORDON. B

F-. Stats: 0/4, SO
If I’m giving Cishek a failing grade, I have to do the same for Ozuna. Not only did he misplay the ball that eventually led to the Mets taking the lead, he also struck out looking in the 9th inning, in the Marlins final attempt to come back. Like Cishek, I’m not worried about Ozuna, he’ll be back to himself soon.
. CF. Miami Marlins. MARCELL OZUNA

Next: Manager Team Grades

Manager. Miami Marlins. MIKE REDMOND. A.
Mike Redmond will receive flak for taking Cosart out after 93 pitches, but his move to pinch hit Bour in the 8th gave the Marlins a chance to take the lead. He also is not in control of his center fielder not fielding a ball properly or his closer blowing a save.

. Miami Marlins. . D.
That’s the end of a 5-game winning streak for the Marlins and their 5th loss of the season to the Mets. Good news, they have another game tomorrow to forget this one.
