Morning Marlin Maniacs. Today’s TGIF edition offers up the latest tidbits on your Miami Marlins, but first does pause to acknowledge the great season put up the University of Miami men’s basketball team.  Watching that broadcast in tape delay kept this post from appearing earlier in the morning, and we can now put such other- sports- related technical difficulties to bed until those Florida Panthers and Miami Heat playoff games start up in April.

Today’s Flash links you to a home-run call only eclipsed by Bobby Thomson‘s famous “shot”, as well as updates on one of the club’s young stars and a modest proposal on how to tweak Spring Training to better prepare players for the Long Season.

Large Gentleman Launches Blast

think that’s what Miami Marlins starting pitcher Tom Koehler said when given the chance to call teammate Giancarlo Stanton‘s first home run of the spring in one of those moments that makes Spring Training so special.  Then again, it might have been something far more hilarious.  Check out MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro’s take, but really we’ve linked this just so you can watch the video.  The biggest winners might have been the Marlins new trio of broadcasters; they’ll still be quoting Koehler in September on Stanton and Justin Bour dingers.

Ozuna On The Mend

Earlier this week, Miami Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna tweaked his ankle on a slide into second base.  After a brief rest, that did not prove severe enough to hold him out of Thursday’s action, only missing Wednesday’s “Koehler Call” contest.  Fingers remaining crossed, but does appear this might be one of those rare times a Marlin isn’t stricken with a severe spring setback.

Spring Training Format Needs Retooling

Lastly, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald sat down with manager Don Mattingly, as well as Stanton and other members of the Miami Marlins to get their views on how effectively a month of day games prepares teams that don’t play their home games at 1060 West Addison in Chicago for the regular season.  Not surprisingly, many feel that it doesn’t.  Mattingly also has a proposal on another aspect of player preparedness, concerning pitcher usage in the preseason.
