The last time Giancarlo Stanton took the field at Miller Park, the All-Star slugger’s night ended in tragedy. An inch higher at most, and he might have never played again on any field. Many watching, in attendance and at home, understandably wondered, if he did come back, if he’d ever be the same.
Tonight though, Stanton left Brewers fans with no doubt that he’s still at the top of his game.
A blistering 460 foot blast was the ultimate highlight on a night that saw the Marlins crank out four home runs, pounding their way to their seventh consecutive win as they beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-5.

To be fair, since that fateful September night, Stanton had hit 34 home runs and allayed the concerns of team doctors and management enough to be offered the biggest contract in North American sports history. But the return nearly 600 days later- Stanton’s 2015 hamate bone injury forestalled a Miller Park appearance last season- still felt bizarrely special, especially after being delayed an additional day by Don Mattingly‘s decision to rest him Friday night.
From the start of this one though, the Marlins came out swinging. Derek Dietrich crushed his second home run of the season on the very first pitch of his very first at bat as the team’s leadoff hitter. Milwaukee would tie the game up in the bottom of the inning, only to see Miami’s offense respond in turn by scoring the next six runs of the contest. Wei-Yin Chen turned in the fourth consecutive quality start by a Miami starting pitcher, and jack of all trades reliever David Phelps locked down his first save of the season.
