Game Story

Scoring

In the top of the first, starter Caleb Smith made quick work of Joe Panik before allowing a Buster Posey double. Andrew McCutchen followed with his seventh homer of the season to give the Giants an early 2-0 lead.

The Giants’ lead would hold until the fourth inning. Brian Anderson drew a walk and J.T. Realmuto singled to left. After a mound visit, Cameron Maybin smacked an RBI-single to cut the lead in half.

Lewis Brinson tied it after a Justin Bour strikeout, but Maybin was thrown out at the plate.

The sixth inning would see the teams split a run each. Austin Jackson singled home Brandon Crawford to give the Giants a slim lead. Bour equalized it on an RBI-single to score Realmuto.

The Giants retook the lead in the seventh frame on an Evan Longoria RBI-single to score Posey. In the bottom of the eighth, Bour again tied the game up, with an RBI-double to score Anderson.

The bottom of the ninth would open with a Miguel Rojas single and a Yadiel Rivera walk. After a JB Shuck infield single, Anderson drove in the game-winner with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Pitching

Smith racked up another quality start, his fifth of the season. He held the Giants to three runs, all earned, on eight hits and zero walks. He whiffed four, got 69-of-107 pitches in the strike zone, and posted a 51 GameScore. That ranks as his eighth best game out of 14 starts so far this season.

Counterpart Andrew Suarez allowed two runs on five hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out three Miami Marlins, placed 44-of-77 pitches over the plate, and bested Smith with a 53 GameScore.

Tayron Guerrero came in for 1 1/3 innings of relief, but allowed a run on two hits and two walks. He didn’t strike anyone out. Drew Rucinski came in for one pitch, nailing down the final out of the eighth with two men on base by getting Panik to fly out. Drew Steckenrider, who pitched the top of the ninth with the score tied at four, did allow a hit and a walk, but earned the victory.
