In the lead-in to the Miami Marlins opening game against the Washington Nationals, the club made several moves.
Major League Transactions
3B Martin Prado was recalled from the Jupiter Hammerheads after a rehab assignment. After missing most of last season, Prado was finally added to the Miami Marlins active roster on April 27th. He played for four weeks before getting put back on the DL with a left hamstring strain. In 24 games this season, he had slashed .194/.242/.226. Entering Thursday night’s game against the Nationals, he had 97 career home runs. That number went up one after a second-inning long ball.
RHP Ben Meyer got called back up from the New Orleans Baby Cakes to the Miami Marlins. This is his third callup since June 6th. Meyer has a 3.38 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP over eight innings with the Marlins. He’s allowed five hits and struck out three.
RHP Tayron Guerrero was placed on the 10-day DL with a left lumbar strain. Guerrero has appeared in a team-leading 41 games, going 1-2 with a. 4.28 ERA. He’s held opposing batters to a 1.58 WHIP and stuck out 54 in 40 innings overall.
OF JB Shuck was designated for assignment. The Miami Marlins signed him to a minor league deal in November of last year out of free agency. He joined the Marlins on April 13th and has appeared in 70 games, slashing .192/.255/.231.
Minor League Transactions
LHP Scott Squier was assigned to the Baby Cakes from Jupiter. In 109 career minor league appearances, he’s 26-18 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. Until this time, he has never appeared above the high-A level. Squier has been with the Marlins since getting selected in the 16th round back in 2014.

RHP Cody Poteet was assigned to Jupiter from the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Miami’s fourth round selection in the 2015 draft, he was 2-0 with a 5.95 ERA for the Shrimp in 2018. He had allowed an opposing batting average of .297 this year, with a 1.63 WHIP.
RHP Ryan Newell was assigned to Jacksonville from the Batavia Muckdogs. He’s been with the club since getting drafted in the seventh round in 2012. This is his second look as high as double-A. In 76 career appearances across five levels of minor league ball, including 61 starts, Newell is 20-19 with a 2.82 ERA. Opponents carry a .231 average and a 1.16 WHIP.
RHP Eli Villalobos was assigned to Jupiter from the GCL Marlins. Villalobos was chosen in the 14th round last month, and struck out two guys in his only inning of work as a professional. He also hit a batter, but didn’t allow a hit or a walk.
