Miami Marlins infielder/outfielder Derek Dietrich is receiving plenty of attention as a potential trade piece as the MLB deadline is less than three weeks away.

Dietrich, who is having a career season for the Miami Marlins could be on the radar of several teams, including the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers. Both National League Central teams are in the playoff hunt and would welcome a veteran bat and someone who can play multiple positions.

Dietrich can play every position in the infield and outfield. As teams jockey for position, Dietrich is a name to watch closely, especially if the Marlins cannot trade any of their relievers – Drew Steckenrider, Kyle Barraclough, Brad Ziegler or Adam Conley – who are rumored to be a consideration by teams looking for bullpen depth.

Per Dayn Perry of cbssports.com, “A number of relievers are positioning themselves to be coveted as we head toward late July, and Derek Dietrich is also a name that’s being bandied about. Speaking of which, here’s Jon Heyman with the latest Dietrich buzz.

Another team that could jump into the deep end with the Marlins is the New York Yankees. The former employer of current Miami owner Derek Jeter may once again make a phone call to gauge whether any of the players mentioned are available. It’s possible the Yankees will look to shore up their bullpen and seek another bat in the lineup.

Dietrich would make sense as a bench player.

As Perry wrote, “Dietrich, soon to be 29 and under team control until after the 2020 season, is indeed a good hitter. Across parts of six big-league seasons, he owns a 111 OPS+, and this season he’s batting .287/.353/.452 with 11 home runs and 16 doubles. He also does a good job of staying out of double plays.”

At the top of the Marlins list of possible trade pieces is J.T. Realmuto, but the All-Star catcher may be priced too high. Starlin Castro, who has played well at second base this season, could move. Miami acquired him and minor league prospects for Giancarlo Stanton this offseason. It’s unlikely the Yankees would be willing to part with more prospects to reacquire a former All-Star player.

During this career, Dietrich has played at least 200 innings at first base, second base, third base and in left field.
