On Hall of Fame Induction Sunday, the Miami Marlins earned a split with the Washington Nationals.
12,112 were in attendance to see Jose Urena and three relievers toss a combined two-hitter to put the Nationals a game below .500.
Game Story
The Fish got on the board in the second inning when Miguel Rojas, Magneuris Sierra, and Urena strung together a trio of two-out singles. The Marlins added another run in the third when Brian Anderson drew first on a Jeremy Hellickson HBP, then came home on a Martin Prado two-out RBI-double.
In the fifth, Anderson and J.T. Realmuto hit consecutive one-out singles to set the table for Prado to collect another RBI, on a two-out single. Realmuto scored when JT Riddle reached base on a Daniel Murphy fielding error, and Rojas collected an RBI with a double to make it 5-0, Marlins.
Pitching
- Urena’s 71 GameScore was tied for his second best start of the season. He earned a 79 on June 15th in a 2-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles. In today’s game, he walked four and allowed one hit while striking out five in six innings. He got 55-of-96 pitches in the strike zone.
- Adam Conley came in to pitch the seventh inning, getting Juan Soto to ground out, Murphy to fly out, and Mark Reynolds to strike out swinging at a 1-2 slider.
- Brad Ziegler, fresh off a one-pitch hold in yesterdays win, struck out Spencer Kieboom and Difo on seven pitches before Adam Eaton flew out to center field. Reports of Ziegler’s demise are greatly exaggerated, it seems. He dropped his ERA to 3.98 for the season, and has allowed 14 hits while striking out 22 in his last 28 innings.
- Drew Steckenrider got Trea Turner to ground out to open the ninth, then made things interesting by walking Bryce Harper and allowing a single to Matt Adams. He then got Soto swinging at a full-count 95 MPH fastball, and Murphy ended it by lining out to Yadiel Rivera.
