The more Miami Marlins pitching prospect Nick Neidert impresses the parent organization, the more of a chance he has to make the 2019 Opening Day roster.

Miami Marlins pitching prospect Nick Neidert won his 10th game of the season for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on Saturday, Neidert, the team’s No. 3 prospect, is the first pitcher in the Southern League to reach double-digit wins this season.

It’s another achievement for the 21-year-old from Atlanta, who has impressed with his array of pitches and his ability to dominate hitters on the Double-A level. The Jumbo Shrimp beat the Biloxi Shuckers 5-1 at MGM Park on the road.

Per jaxshrimp.com, “[Neidert] worked eight innings, striking out a career-high 13 batters as he allowed just one run on five hits with no walks. Neidert enjoyed a dominant stretch from the second inning to the seventh where he set down 15 hitters in a row, including striking out seven straight batters which came just one strikeout shy of tying the Southern League record for most consecutive strikeouts.”

Neidert is not on the team’s 40-man roster but should be closely monitored by the Marlins coaching staff as he looks to move up to Triple-A New Orleans with the hope of reaching the Big Leagues at some point in 2019.

For the season, the right-hander has a 10-6 record with a 2.95 ERA and 131 strikeouts in 21 games.

As I wrote over the weekend here on Marlin Maniac, “Neidert came to Miami in the deal with Seattle that sent second baseman Dee Gordon to the Mariners. He figures to be part of the team’s rotation or have a shot at the pitching staff in 2020.”

The trade appears to have worked out for both ball clubs – the Marlins got a strong pitching prospect and the Mariners got a leader who has played in the outfield and at second base this season.

Neidert took over as the ace for Randy Ready’s team when Pablo Lopez was promoted to Triple-A New Orleans earlier in the season.

Lopez went 1-2 in a shortened season in Jacksonville, but posted a .062 ERA and struck out 51 batters in eight games.

This weekend, Neidert and New Orleans second baseman Isan Diaz were part of the MLB.com’s spotlight on minor league players. Diaz continues to impress at New Orleans and figures to be the team’s future at second base.
