Marlins Minor Leaguer J.B. Shuck Named PCL Player of the Week
J.B. Shuck had a pretty good week for the Miami Marlins minor league affiliate, the New Orleans Baby Cakes. The outfielder was named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for July 30-August 5.
The Miami Marlins will need to take a long hard look at J.B. Shuck, as the outfielder continues to impress at the plate at the Triple-A level. Could winning the PCL Player of the Week award lead to a Sept. 1 call-up
Per the New Orleans Baby Cakes website, Shuck’s numbers were impressive all around.
“Over a five-game stretch, Shuck collected hits in 11-of-16 at-bats (.688), reached base safely in 14-of-19 plate appearances (.737) to post the highest weekly batting average and on-base percentage in professional baseball,” the team’s public relations department wrote. “Additionally, Shuck hit two doubles and one home run, drove in four runs, scored four runs and stole two bases. Shuck has spent over a decade in and out of the minor league system, He was Shuck was drafted in the sixth round, 182nd overall, by the Houston Astros as an outfielder in the 2008 MLB Draft. Be danced around the majors, playing for four organizations before signing with the Marlins in 2018 after being out of baseball for a year.
The 31-year-old outfielder is currently not on the Marlins 40-man roster but figures to get an invite to Spring Training. The organization has worked to retool its farm system with pitching prospects but also used the 2018 MLB Draft to grab every-day prospects for the future.
It may be hard for Shuck to make the Marlins Opening Day roster. The team’s top prospect, Monte Harrison will hopefully move to Triple-A next season. Lewis Brinson was the Opening Day starter in center field in Miami. Rookie Brian Anderson has been a star in right field but could play his natural position, third base, next year. Isaac Galloway and Magneuris Sierra will also vie for a roster spot.
Shuck’s timely hitting helped New Orleans win their last four games. Given the talent with younger prospects, the week he had is even more impressive.
“The Marlins farmhand had hits in all five games, four of which were multi-hit contests. In a three-game series at El Paso from August 1-3, Shuck went five-for-eight; he hit his only home run of the week, and drove in two, in the final game of the set. In the first game of a series at Albuquerque, on August 4, Shuck reached base four times, collecting two hits, two walks, and two runs in New Orleans’ 18-7 win,” the team’s public relations department wrote.
