The Miami Marlins came from behind twice and earned an extra-inning win over the Washington Nationals on Saturday. The win was only Miami’s third in their last 18, and their first since last Saturday.

Game Story

Derek Dietrich hit his 15th homer of the season on a 1-0 pitch to lead off the top of the second inning.

The one-run lead for Wei-Yin Chen and the Miami Marlins lasted until the bottom of the third, when Trea Turner hit his 15th home run of the season. It was a two-run shot, which also scored Washington starting pitcher Jefry Rodriguez. The Marlins would tie it back up at two runs apiece on JT Riddle‘s RBI-double in the fifth.

Riddle added a two-run single in the sixth inning to put the Marlins up by a 4-2 score. In the bottom of the seventh, Tayron Guerrero had a rough go of it, loading the bases and then tossing a wild pitch to score Daniel Murphy. Turner then singled in Adam Eaton to tie it up again.

In the ninth inning, Riddle hit a solo homer to give the Fish a 5-4 lead. Adam Eaton answered with a solo homer of his own in the bottom of the inning to require extras. After Koda Glover intentionally walked Riddle to load the bases, Isaac Galloway hit a two-run single with the eventual game-winner.

  • For the second time in August, Chen finished one out short of a Quality Start. Manager Don Mattingly lifted him after Bryce Harper hit a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth. In 5 2/3 innings on Saturday, Chen struck out three and surrendered two earned runs on five hits and zero walks. Chen earned a 55 GameScore and placed 54-of-83 pitches in the strikezone.
  • Drew Rucinski got into his 18th game of the season for the Miami Marlins. It only took four pitches, including three strikes, but he stranded inherited runner Harper when he got Ryan Zimmerman to line out to Galloway.
  • Tayron Guerrero had an interesting outing. Much more interesting than it should have been, really. He allowed singles to Daniel Murphy and Eaton to lead off the seventh, then hit Matt Wieters to load the bases. He then tossed a wild pitch, allowing Murphy to score. Guerrero got Matt Adams to pop out to short, then allowed Eaton to score on a Turner single into center field.
  • With inherited runners on the corners, one out and a tie score, Adam Conley came in for one pitch and got two outs in the seventh. He induced all-world rookie Juan Soto to ground into a double play, 4-6-3. Conley stayed in through the eighth, giving up a walk, no hits and no runs. He also earned a strikeout.

  • Drew Steckenrider came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth with a one-run lead, and blew his save opportunity on Eaton’s solo shot. Steckenrider did earn the win, and is now 4-2 for the season.
  • Brett Graves pitched a perfect 10th for his first career save.
