The Miami Marlins may have had a season many would like to forget, but beating the New York Yankees on Wednesday night helped wase some of the pain.

I am not one who believes in moral victories, but the Miami Marlins won their game against the New York Yankees 9-3 on Wednesday night and proved as an organization they will be a team to watch in the next few seasons.

When your team is 51-77, you look for the silver lining in just about everything. Beating the team that claimed your biggest star of all time, Giancarlo Stanton, and finding a way to subdue a team that is headed to the postseason has to give team owner Derek Jeter and the 25-man roster a bit of satisfaction.

“You try to reset your club and your thinking as far as where we’re at, and how we have to play,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said via Joe Frisaro’s story on MLB.com. “I think they kind of came together and are playing hard. That’s all you ask, really.”

The city of Miami has been in a semi-state of mourning since Giancarlo Stanton was traded to the American League East contender for Starlin Castro, Jorge Guzman, and Jose Devers. Both Guzman and Devers figure to be part of the Major League roster within the next three seasons.

Castro has been one of the more consistent veterans this seasons.

What this win also did was show starter Trevor Richards has the ability to become a No. 1 or No. 2 starter in this rotation. With Pablo Lopez part of the starting five and Sandy Alcantara almost guaranteed a spot in the rotation next year, the future is bright with three rookies this season proving they can solve Major League hitting.

“Richards kept the Yankees off-stride over 5 1/3 innings, striking out nine and effectively mixing his four-seam fastball, slider, and changeup,” Frisaro wrote. “Of his 30 changeups, he got nine swinging strikes. Richards held New York without a hit until one out in the fourth inning.”

The Marlins have only a handful of games remaining and less than a week until the team expands its roster to 40 players. With the Atlanta Braves coming to town for a four-game series starting tonight, the franchise could make a statement and play spoiler in the National League East playoff race.

Elieser Hernandez gets the ball, facing Sean Newcomb, who is another in a long line of young Braves pitchers. Hernandez has a 1.18 ERA in four appearances in relief against the Braves, He will make his sixth start as a rookie this season.
