Exactly halfway from last game to next game, we take a look at just how long 91 days is.

That’s one season. Like, one, three month season. Let’s call it Winter – although Winter in South Florida is like Spring anywhere else. The Miami Marlins last played on September 30th, 90 days ago, and their next game is on March 28th, 91 days from now.

Seven times 13 is 91, so is the product of two prime numbers, the luckiest and the unluckiest. 91 days is 2,184 hours, 131,040 minutes, and 7,862,400 seconds. 91 is also the highest jersey number ever used by the Miami Marlins franchise.

Miami Marlins Pitcher Tim Spooneybarger

Tim Spooneybarger exceeded rookie limits with the Atlanta Braves in 2002, while wearing the number 43 jersey. After that season, the Braves traded him with Ryan Baker to the Miami Marlins for pitcher Mike Hampton and cash.

Spooneybarger donned the number 91 jersey upon joining the Miami Marlins for the 2003 season. He pitched in 33 contests out of the bullpen, and posted a 1-2 record with a 4.07 ERA. He struck out 32 and walked only 11 in 42 innings. Despite his low-ish 6.86 K/9 rate, his ground-ball rate of 68.2 percent was sufficient to keep the basepaths relatively empty. His resultant 0.905 WHIP was the best mark on the Marlins, although Spooneybarger didn’t pitch enough innings to qualify for the team lead. Opponents slashed an anemic .190/.248/.254 when facing him.

Spooneybarger went on the disabled list on June 11th and didn’t get into another major league game for the rest of his career. In 2005, he appeared in four games for the high-A Jupiter Hammerheads in the Florida State League. The Marlins released him after the season.

Spooneybarger appeared in six games for the Aberdeen IronBirds in 2008, the short-season-A New York-Penn League affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. That was the last time he appeared in organized baseball.

1991

The 91st year of the last century of the second millienium was marked by several cultural touchstones. The top five movies were The Silence of the Lambs, the Keanu Reeves gem Point Break, Terminator 2, Hook, and the Kevin Costner version of Robin Hood. The top five hits were by Bryan Adams, Color Me Badd, C+C Music Factory, Paula Abdul, and somebody named Timmy T.

In baseball, the Minnesota Twins topped the Atlanta Braves in seven games to win the World Series. The year was two seasons prior to the Miami Marlins entry into the National League. It was also the year that the team gained entry into the NL, awarded to Miami and eventually taking on the moniker, “Florida Marlins.”
