Miami Marlins 2021 MLB Draft Player Profile: OF Colton Cowser

The next draft prospect up in our Marlins 2021 MLB Draft Player Profile is Sam Houston State OF Colton Cowser.

Originally from Cypress, TX, Cowser attended Cy Ranch High School where he has selected as First-Team All-State for Class 6A during his senior season. Deciding to stay in-state and attend Sam Houston State, Cowser has impressed from day one on campus.

Cowser had an outstanding 2019 freshman season where he posted a .361/.450/.602 slash line to pair with an impressive 1.052 OPS. Cowser also hit for power as well in his 216 at-bats hitting seven home runs and 54 RBI’s, while also stealing nine bases. As expected, this was enough to earn numerous honors and accolades including the Southland Conference Hitter of the Year, First-Team All-Conference, multiple Freshman All-America teams, and many more including earning a spot on the Team USA Collegiate National Team.

Cowser’s phenomenal freshman season reflected in his 2020 preseason honors as he was selected to multiple preseason All-America teams, including becoming the first player in Sam Houston State history to be selected to the preseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award. During the limited 2020 season, Cowser hit for a .255 AVG in 14 games with five RBI’s and six stolen bases.

Coming into the 2021 season, Cowser was once again selected to multiple preseason All-America teams, as well as one of the top draft prospects for the 2021 MLB Draft. If you were to look at his stats for the 2021 season, it’s clear why he is considered as a top MLB Draft pick.

Colton Cowser 2021 season stats:

  • 203 AB’s – .374 AVG, .490 OBP, .680 SLG, 1.170 OPS, 16 HR, 52 RBI, 17 SB

Cowser is regarded by multiple draft analysts as the top collegiate hitter in this draft. Getting on base however is the main theme with Cowser as he has a career .460 OBP at Sam Houston State while drawing 76 career walks compared to only 70 strikeouts. Not only does Cowser get on base, but he also has a decent amount of power evident by 24 career HR’s, and can make opponents pay on the base paths with 31 career stolen bases.

Cowser has also spent time at Sam Houston State at all three outfield positions, but arguably is the best in center.

It’s clear why many draft analysts see Cowser as a potential Top 10 overall pick. While the Marlins have multiple young outfielders in their farm system, Cowser falling to them at pick 16 may end up being a selection they have to make if available.
