Miami Marlins 2021 MLB Draft Profile: OF Will Taylor

The next draft prospect up in our Marlins 2021 MLB Draft Profile is outfielder Will Taylor.

Taylor attended Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, SC where he is a phenomenal multi-sport athlete. Rated as the No. 20 overall prospect in this Draft, Taylor’s athleticism alone makes him one of the more sought-after outfielders available in the First Round.

As mentioned previously, Taylor is a phenomenal multi-sport athlete. While already a top MLB Draft prospect, Taylor is also a multi-time state wrestling champion, as well as a 3-star QB according to 247Sports where he is currently committed to Clemson to play both football and baseball, should he decide not to turn pro.

Looking at his 2021 senior season alone, Taylor hit for a .450 AVG with seven HR’s, 33 RBI’s, and 34 runs scored along with a .586 OBP, 1.455 OPS, and 21 stolen bases. As expected, this was more-than-enough to earn Taylor the South Carolina Baseball Gatorade Player of the Year award.

When looking at Taylor’s tools, the one that sticks out the most is undoubtedly his elite speed, grading out at a 70 on MLB’s 20/80 scale. Sporting a loose right-handed swing, Taylor has shown an ability to make consistent contact while also flashing occasional flashes of power at times.

While Taylor’s speed allows him to takeover a game on the basepaths, it also allows him to cover ground in the outfield. Spending most of his high school career in center field, Taylor projects to remain in center going forward due to his combination of his speed and fielding abilities.

While he is already a top baseball prospect, we have yet to see just how good Taylor can be when solely devoted to baseball. Already a phenomenal pure athlete, Taylor’s potentially increased upside when playing only baseball may make him one of the most intriguing prospects in the First Round. Could he be in play for the Marlins at pick 16?
