It appears the Miami Marlins trade talks surrounding star outfielder Starling Marte are coming to an end in what is the first of possibly many moves for the Marlins over the next couple of days.

Marlins Trade Rumors: The Miami Marlins are trading outfielder Starling Marte to the Oakland Athletics.

According to Craig Mish of the Miami Herald, the Marlins are close to trading Marte to the Oakland Athletics.

Marte has been phenomenal for the Marlins so far this season slashing .306/.407/.453 with seven HR’s, 22 RBI’s, and 25 SB’s. A free agent at seasons end, Marte and Miami were unable to agree on an extension, making it increasingly likely that the veteran outfielder would be traded.

Marte should instantly slot into a starting role in Oakland’s outfield, and immediately provide help for a team that is chasing the Astros in the AL West current six games back.

In return, the Marlins are reportedly receiving 23-year old left-handed pitcher Jesus Luzardo per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

Luzardo, a native of Parkman, FL and a graduate for Stoneman Douglas High School, is in year three in the big leagues with Oakland where he has posted a 6.87 ERA working primarily as a reliever. The former top prospect was considered one of the top left-handed pitching prospects in baseball recently.

At first glance, the acquisition of a young pitcher like Luzardo is a phenomenal return for Miami in trading away a rental. Luzardo now joins the Marlins stellar group of multiple young arms including Alcantara, Lopez, Rogers, Meyer, Sanchez, Cabrera, and more in arguably one of the best young cores of pitchers in baseball.

Are the Miami Marlins done making moves, or is this only the beginning of the action over the next couple of days? Marte will certainly be missed, but it certainly appears that the Marlins go a phenomenal return in Luzardo.
