When the Miami Marlins traded starting outfielders Starling Marte and Adam Duvall at the 2021 MLB Trade Deadline, there were two clear players that could potentially benefit from the suddenly available playing time.

One that was obvious when the trades happened was major league ready outfielder Bryan De La Cruz who was acquired from the Astros in the Yimi Garcia trade. De La Cruz has show some flashes in very limited action slashing .244/.262/.268 through 11 games.

However, the other player that would receive extended playing time was 27-year-old outfielder Lewis Brinson.

Brinson’s time in Miami has been talked about often as he was the centerpiece return for the Marlins in the Christian Yelich trade, but just hasn’t seemed to full get-going offensively. Now in year four of his time in the organization, it appears something may have clicked offensively for Brinson who is having the best year of his career, partly due to his impressive recent run since returning from Triple-A.

Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson has been impressive since returning from Triple-A.

Entering play on Tuesday, Brinson is slashing .268/.302/.472 for the season with five HR’s and 19 RBI’s. Putting up career-high numbers in almost every offensive statistical category, it’s clear the the 27-year-old is having a career-year, partly due to his previously mentioned impressive run at the plate.

Being recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville on July 19, Brinson quickly got things going offensively slashing .273/.360/.545 through nine games. Raising his season batting average from .222 to .233 in the process, it appeared something had clicked for Brinson offensively, and his production so far this month has only confirmed that.

Through nine games so far this month, Brinson is slashing .364/.400/.667 with two HR’s and 11 RBI’s across 33 at-bats. Batting primarily in the No. 4-5 spot in Miami’s lineup, Brinson has also collected five multi-hit games so far this month.

To put this recent run at the plate for Brinson in perspective, here are his season averages on July 19th (when he was recalled) compared to today:

  • AVG: .222 – .268
  • OBP: .233 – .302
  • SLG: .347 – .472
  • OPS: .580 – .774

With the Marlins not playing postseason baseball this season, they should use the remaining two months to see what they may have, or need to address, going into the 2022 campaign. When looking at the outfield in particular going into next season as well, Brinson should 100% factor into Miami’s plans in some way if he continues this impressive showing at the plate over the next couple of weeks.
