Selected by the Miami Marlins in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB Draft (No. 118 overall), Tanner Allen joined the Marlins organization in late-July as already one of the best pure-hitters in Miami’s system.

The 2021 SEC Player of the Year, excitement will only continue to grow surrounding the 23-year-old outfielder after making his professional debut at the end of the 2021 season.

Miami Marlins 2021 Season Review: OF Tanner Allen

After winning the 2021 national championship with Mississippi State, Allen made his professional debut in the Marlins organization on July 29 with the FCL Marlins going 0-for-3 with a walk. Only appearing in three games with the FCL Marlins however, Allen would join the Low-A Jupiter Hammerheads on August 4 where he would remain for the rest of the season.

Going hitless in his first five games with the Hammerheads, things began to click for Allen at the plate in mid-August. Slashing .279/.333/.410 across 16 games through the remainder of the month, Allen drove in a total of seven runs, including his first professional home run.

The 23-year-old would go on to collect four hits across Jupiter’s last nine games during the month of September bringing an end to his first professional action.

Appearing in 33 total games this season between the FCL Marlins and Low-A Jupiter, Allen would slash .183/.259/.275 with two home runs and 10 RBI’s. Making 135 total plate appearances, Allen would collect a total of 22 hits (one double, two triples), as well as drawing 11 walks to 22 strikeouts.

Splitting time in Low-A Jupiter mainly between left and right field defensively, Allen also posted a perfect fielding percentage.

A career .336/.411/.522 hitter at Mississippi State, Allen was one of the top college hitters in the entire 2021 draft class, and it is only a matter of time until the Marlins No. 28 prospect begins to skyrocket up the prospect ranks. As for where that will begin next season, Allen will likely start the 2022 campaign in either Low-A Jupiter or High-A Beloit.
