Miami Marlins 2021 Season Review: C Joe Mack

Selected by the Miami Marlins in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft (No. 31 overall) out of Williamsville East High School (NY), Joe Mack instantly became the top catching prospect in the Marlins system. One of the top overall catchers available in the 2021 Draft, Mack would make his professional debut towards the end of the 2021 season as one of the most exciting young prospects in the Miami organization.

Making his professional debut with the FCL Marlins almost a month after he was drafted, Mack debuted on August 10 against the FCL Astros going 1-for-3 with a run scored. Mack however would struggle across his next seven games to finish the month of August going hitless across 21 at-bats.

Going on to appear in 11 more games during the month of September, Mack would see some success at the plate which included a .721 OPS across 28 at-bats, as well as his first professional home run on September 13 against the FCL Mets.

The 18-year-old backstop in all would appear in a total of 19 games during the 2021 season where he would make 75 total plate appearances. Across that span, Mack would slash .132/.373/.208 at the plate with seven hits total that included one home run, one double, and two RBI’s.

Posting a .581 OPS, Mack would also draw an impressive 20 walks at the plate compared to 22 strikeouts, as well as scoring a total of nine runs. Splitting time between catcher and DH, Mack started in 11 games behind the plate where he posted a perfect fielding percentage, as well as a 43% caught stealing percentage.

The Miami Marlins No. 8 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, Mack showed some flashes during limited action this season, and could be set for a big 2022 campaign. One of the top overall power hitting prospects in Miami’s system, Mack will likely begin next season with either the FCL Marlins, or in Low-A Jupiter.
