Miami Marlins 2021 Season Review: C Payton Henry

Acquired by the Miami Marlins at the 2021 MLB Trade Deadline from the Milwaukee Brewers in the John Curtiss trade, Payton Henry made his major league debut with Miami during the 2021 season. One of the Marlins top overall catching prospects, Henry could play a key role for the Marlins at the big league level during the 2022 season.

Miami Marlins 2021 Season Review: C Payton Henry

After splitting time between Triple-A and Double-A with the Brewers earlier in the season, Henry would join Triple-A Jacksonville on August 1. Henry however got-off to a slow start with the Jumbo Shrimp collecting only two hits across his first 25 at-bats, but would however finish the month of August on a strong note by collecting five hits across his last six games, three of which were home runs.

Slashing .273/.360/.409 across his first seven games in September, Henry would receive his first-ever big league call-up. Making his major league debut on September 17 with the Marlins, Henry would go-on to appear in five games in which he went 4-for-15 at the plate with one walk and five strikeouts.

In all, Henry would appear in a total of 22 games in Triple-A this season with Jacksonville in which he slashed .188/.300/.391 with four home runs and eight RBI’s. Henry would collect a total of 13 hits, six of which went for extra bases, as well as drawing 10 walks compared to 26 strikeouts.

Also drawing 16 starts behind the plate with the Jumbo Shrimp, Henry posted a .986 fielding percentage, as well as throwing out 20% of base-runners.

As mentioned previously, Henry will likely play a key role for the Miami Marlins at the major league level next season. Currently rated by MLB Pipeline as the Marlins No. 30 overall prospect, Henry will likely begin the 2022 campaign in Triple-A Jacksonville, but could join the big league roster at some point early next season.
