Former Miami Marlins first round pick and current No. 11 prospect Braxton Garrett posted yet another strong minor league season, as well as seeing more time in the big leagues compared to a year ago. On the verge of staying in the major leagues full-time, Garrett could play a key role for the Marlins in 2022.

Miami Marlins 2021 Season Review: LHP Braxton Garrett

Beginning the 2021 season with Triple-A Jacksonville, Garrett would only make two starts with the Jumbo Shrimp before being called-up to the big leagues. That call-up would only last one game however as Garrett threw three innings of relief in Los Angeles before re-joining the Jumbo Shrimp.

Returning to Triple-A in late-May, the left-hander would go-on to post three impressive starts that included a combined 1.69 ERA with four walks and 17 strikeouts across 16 innings, and would earn yet another call-up in mid-June.

Making only two starts, Garrett would be optioned to Triple-A once again where he would remain for the next month making five starts during that span, three of which the southpaw allowed two-or-fewer runs. Called-up to the big leagues yet again after this, Garrett would make two starts for the Marlins that included arguably the best start of his young career on July 24 in which he allowed two runs against the Padres across seven innings with four hits, one walk, and 10 strikeouts.

Optioned to Triple-A after that start, Garrett would only make one appearance with the Jumbo Shrimp before rejoining Miami only a little over a week later where he would make three more starts in his final action the major leagues this season, the fourth time Garrett was called-up during the 2021 season.

Rejoining Triple-A after, Garrett would post arguably his best stretch of the season to finish the year posting a 2.32 ERA across his final seven starts with 14 walks and 33 strikeouts.

Garrett would make a total of eight appearances (seven starts) with the Marlins during the 2021 season in which the left-hander posted a 1-2 record with a 5.03 ERA across 34 innings pitched. Striking out a total of 32 batters compared to 20 walks, Garrett also posted a 1.824 WHIP, as well as opponents holding a .318/.413/.447 slash line against.

For Garrett’s time in Triple-A overall, the 24-year-old made a total of 18 starts with the Jumbo Shrimp in which he posted a 5-4 record with a 3.89 ERA. Pitching a total of 85.2 innings, Garrett struck out a total of 86 batters compared to 32 walks with a 1.226 WHIP.
