After looking at the Miami Marlins career of right-hander Edward Mujica in the debut of a new weekly series here at Marlin Maniac last week, we take a look at the career of yet another pitcher in the second installment of the series this week.

As you can tell by the title as well, the player we will be looking at this week is Jose Quijada, a now 26-year-old left-hander who spent the early part of his professional career in the Marlins organization from 2013-19.

A native of Venezuela, Quijada would sign with the Marlins as a free agent back on September 9, 2013, and would make his professional debut during the 2014 season as an 18-year-old with the DSL Marlins. Impressing during the 2014 campaign as both a starter and reliever, Quijada would however transition to a full-time reliever role in 2015-16.

Rising throughout the Marlins system in the minor leagues, the left-hander would reach the Triple-A level for the first time during the 2018 season, and would have his contract selected by the major league club on November 20, 2018 where he would make his major league debut early in the 2019 season.

Splitting time between Triple-A and the major leagues in 2019, Quijada would go-on to make a total of 34 relief appearances with Miami during the 2019 season. Posting a 2-3 record with a 5.76 ERA, Quijada pitched a total of 29.2 innings with the club during 2019 with 26 walks and 44 strikeouts, as well as a 30.6 K% and one save as a rookie.

After spending the 2019 season with the Miami Marlins, Quijada would however be DFA’d by the club on February 3, 2020, and was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Angels a week later. Spending the last two season’s (2020-21) in the Angels organization, Quijada has posted a combined 4.91 ERA across 29.1 innings at the major league level.
