Miami Marlins: 5 prospects that could make their MLB debut in 2022

While it is currently unknown on just when the 2022 Miami Marlins season will begin, it’s still fun to speculate on what we may see over the course of the next year. When speculating on that as well, one thing that we will 100% see again in 2022 is some of Miami’s top prospects making their MLB debuts.

5 Miami Marlins prospects that could make their MLB debut in 2022

5. OF/1B Jerar Encarnacion

A former international signing by Miami back in 2015, Encarnacion initially struggled at times to begin his professional career, but had a breakout 2019 campaign that included 16 home runs and 71 RBI’s (led Marlins system) as a 21-year-old split between Low-A and High-A.

Arguably one of the Marlins’ prospects most affected by no 2020 minor league season, Encarnacion would impress at Miami’s alternate training site, and would be added to Miami’s 40-man roster back in November of 2020, protecting him from the Rule 5 Draft.

Despite only appearing in 63 games at the Double-A level in 2021 (.704 OPS, 9 HR, 29 RBI), Miami’s No. 24 prospect could very-well see the Triple-A level for the first time early in the 2022 season, and depending on how he performs, is a likely September call-up candidate this year.

4. OF Griffin Conine

The son of “Mr. Marlin” Jeff Conine, Griffin was acquired by Miami as the PTBNL in the Jonathan Villar deal at the 2020 trade deadline, joining the organization coming off a 2019 season that included a .946 OPS and 22 home runs across 80 games in Low-A with Toronto.

The Marlins No. 20 prospect, Conine is also coming off an impressive 2021 season that included 36 home runs and 84 RBI’s, a season that was split between High-A Beloit and Double-A Pensacola.

Similar to Encarnacion previously however, Conine has yet to see the Triple-A level, but it is something that will likely happen very-early during the 2022 season. Left off of the 40-man roster by Miami earlier this offseason, Conine is available to be selected in the upcoming Rule 5 Draft by other teams, but should make his MLB debut at some point in 2022 if he remains with Miami.

3. OF Peyton Burdick

Originally selected in the third round of the 2019 MLB Draft by Miami, Burdick was coming off a phenomenal 2019 season at Wright State, and continued that success by slashing .308/.407/.542 with 11 home runs across 69 games in A-Ball.

With no minor league season in 2020, Burdick continued to impress in the instructional league last season, and fully cemented himself as one of the top outfield prospects in Miami’s system. Now the Marlins No. 14 overall prospect, Burdick is coming off a 2021 season that earned the 24-year-old Marlins Minor League Player of the Year honors while posting a combined .823 OPS with 23 home runs.

Reaching the Triple-A level at the end of last season, Burdick is an internal option that has been talked about previously about potentially starting the year in centerfield for the Marlins, but based on only eight career games above Double-A, it seems unlikely to begin the year. However, Burdick could very easily make his MLB debut with Miami in 2022, even as early as June or July depending on how the outfielder starts the year.

2. OF JJ Bleday

When selected in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Vanderbilt, Bleday instantly became one of the top overall prospects in Miami’s system, and was expected to be one of the focal points of the Marlins everyday outfield for years to come.

As you likely know however, the Marlins current No. 5 prospect has struggled at times during his professional career, a stretch that includes a .695 OPS across 110 games in Double-A last season. Even despite those struggles last season, there is still a lot of hype surrounding Bleday entering the 2022 season, partly due to his impressive showing in the 2021 Arizona Fall League in which the 24-year-old slashed .316/.435/.600 with five home runs and 24 RBI’s across 24 games.

Likely beginning the year with Triple-A Jacksonville, Bleday could easily make his MLB debut in 2022, likely with a potential call-up happening around the same timeline as Burdick previously.

1. RHP Max Meyer

One of the most-anticipated MLB debuts of any prospect around baseball that will happen in 2022 is Meyer, the Marlins first round pick from the 2020 MLB Draft out of Minnesota.

Miami’s No. 3 prospect, as well as the No. 30 overall prospect in baseball, Meyer enjoyed a phenomenal first professional season a year ago in which the right-hander posted a combined 2.27 ERA with a 42:130 BB:K between Double-A and Triple-A.

It is all but official that Meyer will make his MLB debut during the 2022 season, with the lone questions being when and in what role? While there is a chance the right-hander begins the season in the Miami Marlins rotation, Meyer will likely begin the year in Triple-A, with a major league call-up likely set at some point in either May or June.
