Horrible news to start the day, but it appears that young Miami Marlins ace Jesus Luzardo is injured. He has a forearm strain and that’s very concerning, as such injuries often lead to Tommy John surgery. Interestingly, Luzardo had Tommy John surgery early on in his career. What’s going to happen now?
Jesus Luzardo may be headed for Tommy John surgery.
Jesus Luzardo has been outstanding for the Miami Marlins, as he currently has a 4.03 ERA/3.74 ERA/3.07 xFIP and a 12.72 K/9 with a 97.2 mph fastball velocity in 29.0 IP. He’s clearly on his way to becoming a mainstay in The Fish’s rotation.
Luzardo has already spoken to reporter Christina De Nicola from MLB, and claimed that his IL placement is just “precautionary”, and that he doesn’t feel like he did when he first had Tommy John surgery. This is of course very encouraging news, though still alarming considering that him feeling differently doesn’t mean that he’s fine. If he does need the surgery again, it could very well be career-ending sadly.
De Nicola further reported that Cody Poteet will get Luzardo’s next start. That might not be the best thing to hear, as with all due respect to Poteet, (who has been very effective this season) it’s time to promote Max Meyer!! Give him a chance! Meyer would be the perfect replacement for Luzardo, and then hopefully an ace who stays in the rotation even when Luzardo is back.
So what should we expect to happen next? Unfortunately I’m preparing for the worst, that out young ace will require Tommy John surgery. I’ll be thrilled if he does not, but again expecting the worst will prepare us the best in my opinion. I wish Luzardo a speedy recovery from whatever extent of an injury that he has, he deserves to be healthy and to be able to pitch. In the meantime it’s time to look towards the farm and giving our stud prospects a chance. You know who I’m talking about.
