Miami Marlins: What are the Fish getting in prospect Jordan Groshans?

The Miami Marlins made a trade on Tuesday afternoon according to Craig Mish of the Miami Herald, sending relievers Anthony Bass and Zach Pop to the Toronto Blue Jays. In return, the Marlins received an intriguing prospect in 22-year-old Jordan Groshans, a former first round pick by Toronto who could be on the verge of a major league debut in 2023.

When looking at Groshans overall however, just what are the Miami Marlins getting in the 22-year-old?

A former first round pick, Groshans was originally taken No. 12 overall in the 2018 MLB Draft by the Blue Jays out of Magnolia High School in Texas. A player with exciting hit tools out of high school, Groshans would impress during his first professional action in 2018, slashing .296/.353/.446 across 48 games in Rookie Ball.

Groshans would make noise in A-Ball during the 2019 season as well batting for a .337 AVG across 23 games before suffering an injury, followed by no minor league season in 2020. The former first round pick would also enjoy a strong 2021 campaign in Double-A slashing .291/.367/450, but has however struggled at times in 2022 at the Triple-A level where he holds a .644 OPS across 67 games.

Toronto’s No. 4 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline, Groshans is also considered as a Top 100 prospect in baseball, ranking No. 82 overall. As mentioned previously, the former first round pick has solid hit tools, as well as a strong arm defensively where he has seen a majority of his time at shortstop, along with a notable amount of appearances at third base.

Now with Miami, Groshans will be the Marlins top infield prospect behind only shortstop Kahlil Watson, and will likely be sent to Triple-A Jacksonville where he could remain for the conclusion of the 2022 season. However, don’t necessarily rule out a potential big league call-up later this season either, especially if the 22-year-old has success early on in Jacksonville.

Regardless of that however, the Miami Marlins are likely getting a prospect with offensive upside in Groshans, one who should make his MLB debut at some point within the next year.
