The Miami Marlins were victims of bad luck this season

Kim Ng isn’t a good general manager and the Miami Marlins would be better off with someone else in charge. That said, The Fish should’ve been better this season and it’s not all Ng‘s fault. There was a tremendous amount of bad luck that hurt the team that was indeed given upgrades last off-season. Let’s look at some of the issues that the Miami Marlins had to deal with…

The Miami Marlins weren’t expected to be THIS bad.

Luck is part of life and sometimes things just don’t go the way you want them to be. A hitter mistimes his swing by a second, or a pitcher gets a bad grip and throws a bad pitch, and it can decide the whole game. The Miami Marlins have a 21-29 W-L record in one-run games. That is simple bad luck. If it was closer to average, then the record would’ve been 25-25 or so.

Kim Ng didn’t do a bad job improving the Miami Marlins bullpen, adding lights out closer Cole Sulser from the Baltimore Orioles, along with Tanner Scott. Who knew that the former closer would be unable to stay healthy and thus productive? He has a 5.08 ERA but a 3.44 FIP. That is bad luck. Anthony Bender going from a shutdown reliever last season to struggling and an IL stint; Dylan Floro going from a shutdown closer to struggling and getting injured also was  unexpected.

The World Series MVP Jorge Soler was in high demand, he was signed to a good deal with player opt-outs to motivate him. He had a slow start but then hit like an All-Star before getting injured, struggling and going on the IL. Ng was wrong to sign Avisail Garcia, but his horrible garbage bin production wasn’t expected either.. Jazz Chisholm Jr. breaking out and then getting injured was also unexpected.

Kim Ng should’ve had a better off-season, we all know that. She should’ve done more. That said, no one could’ve predicted the amount of injuries and underperformance that hit the Miami Marlins. We are a better team than this, and next season can’t possibly be this bad as so much bad luck can’t possibly happen again.
