4 Reasons why Hye-seong Kim should be a top priority for the Miami Marlins

The Downside

For all of the reasons to love the Kim/Marlins fit, there are admittedly some limitations. This is particularly true of Kim's offensive game.

The infielder has solid contact skills, batting .304 over his KBO career. However, his bat lacks any true pop. Kim hit only 37 total home runs in his seven-year Korean career. His single-season high, 11, came last season.

Kim's profile shares similarities to other names Marlins fans will recognize. His combination of contact skills and speed make him eerily similar to current Fish Xavier Edwards. While Edwards carries a top-speed advantage, Kim's superior glovework makes him unique.

The profile also shares similarities with former Marlin SS Miguel Rojas. Kim has more speed. But the defensive ceiling is comparable.

Other MLB player comparisons include former Rockies second baseman Brendan Rodgers (who I recently wrote about as a potential Marlins target) and veteran journeyman Isiah Kiner-Falefa.

The Verdict

Fans should consider Kim's full skillset, both strengths and weaknesses, as they properly calibrate their expectations. The KBO star should not be counted on as an offensive force. Anything his new team gets from his bat should be considered a bonus.

Otherwise, Kim is a perfect and realistic top target for Miami. The club needs an everyday shortstop. Adding Kim would allow Edwards to shift to second (or even centerfield). Norby would focus on developing into the everyday third baseman. Otto Lopez could become a super-utility star. Lastly, Jake Burger, Jonah Bride, and top prospect Deyvison De Los Santos can split time at first and DH.

Most of the Marlins roster awkwardness immediately melts away with a capable shortstop in the fold. At just $8-ish million per year, what could set Miami up better for 2025 and beyond than adding Hye-seong Kim?

Peter Bendix and Miami's front office should make him a top priority this offseason!
