It feels like an end of an era for the Miami Marlins. The Fish made a horrible trade on February 7, 2019. The trade saw the team trade C JT Realmuto to the Philadelphia Phillies for Minor League pitchers Sixto Sanchez and Will Stewart and C Jorge Alfaro. The trade was a complete disaster for The Fish, as the main acquisition Sixto could never stay healthy. It was a disaster.
The Miami Marlins made a terrible trade back in 2019 and it never paid off.
It's a trade that will live in Miami Marlins infamy. JT Realmuto has done a good job for the Philadelphia Phillies. From 2019 to 2024 with the team, he batted .266/.331/.463 and was worth 22.4 WAR for that time. His best season came in 2022, when he batted .276/.342/.478, with 22 home runs and 84 RBI in 139 games and 504 AB. He was worth 6.6 WAR for that production.
Will Stewart has never pitched for the Miami Marlins at the Major League level. He's currently 37 years old. Jorge Alfaro played with The Fish from 2019 to 2021. He batted just .252/.298/.386 for that run and was worth just 0.2 WAR for his production.
This brings us to the "star of the trade" Sixto Sanchez. Sixto was a top prospect for Philly and the expectation was that he would be a star with The Fish. Let's just say it didn't even come close to that in reality. It was as much of a disaster as it could've been.
Sixto debuted with the Marlins in the shortened 2020 season. That season, he pitched to a 3.46 ERA/3.50 FIP, with 7.6 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 7 games and 39.0 innings pitched. He was worth 1.5 WAR for that performance. He DIDN'T PITCH for the team at all until the 2024 season! How did he do this season? He pitched to a dreadful 6.06 ERA/4.74 FIP, with 4.3 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 in 14 games (7 starts) and 35.2 innings pitched. He was worth -0.5 WAR.
Sixto Sanchez was waived and after not being claimed, has now chosen to become a free agent. I feel bad for his health issues, but he's not going to be missed by the Miami Marlins.
